VLADIMIR LATYSHEV
The 'Vladimir Latyshev' has been stuck in the port of Saint-Malo since March 2022, when it docked to deliver a cargo of magnesia, and the situation is becoming critical due to a lack of fuel. Russian sailors take turns maintaining the ship. They also carry out the manoeuvres requested by the harbour master's office to maintain the port activity. The ship needs fuel for its small movements and to keep it moored, such as to keep the heating, refrigerators or fire extinguishing system running. However, since 2024, the harbour master no longer receives the necessary compensation. Russia has always paid, but the bookings have been blocked by the French authorities as part of the sanctions following the invasion of Ukraine. Without diesel, there is no electricity, an the crew could then be forced to abandon ship, for their own safety and the ship would then become a ghost ship. To prevent this dramatic situation, the local association Mor Glaz is putting pressure on France to keep the ship sailing. The crew of the ship is still being supplied with food and other necessities thanks to advances. The debt is already estimated at 150,000 Euros. JAIRAN
The 'Golbon' (IMO: 9289033) and 'Jairan', both carrying an ingredient for missile propellant, will sail from China to Iran in the next few weeks according intelligence from security officials in two Western countries. The transactions could make the Chinese entities involved subject to U.S. sanctions aimed at curbing Iran's weapons programs, as the two Iranian vessels are already under U.S. sanctions. were expected to carry more than 1,000 tonnes of sodium perchlorate, which is used to make ammonium perchlorate, the main ingredient for solid propellant for missiles. YU ZHOU QI HANG
The Scottish subsea specialist Sulmara has supported the fuel recovery operation from the 'Yu Zhou Qi Hang'. At the request of the Taiwanese government, Sulmara mobilized a WAM-V 16 uncrewed surface vehicle (USV) and a team of survey specialists to assist in the operation to recover almost 300 tons of fuel oil, the vessel had on board, when it lost power off the coast of Taiwan on Oc 29 asTyphoon Kong-rey struck. The Taiwanese marine contractor Dong Fang Offshore was called upon to deploy the 'Orient Constructor', a vessel capable of lifting salvage equipment and pumps onto the wreck. However, the operation presented high risks because maneuvering the 'Orient Constructor' close to the grounded vessel in adverse weather and shallow waters was further complicated by limited information on the potential subsea hazards below the keel. To mitigate the risk of damage to the 'Orient Constructor' and ensure safe navigation in the shallow waters, Dong Fang Offshore worked alongside Sulmara to conduct a complex seabed survey. Sulmara equipped a WAM-V 16 USV with a multibeam echosounder (MBES), a sensor used to map the seabed. The data collected was used to independently verify and cross check existing seabed data, instilling confidence to proceed. There was a risk that objects from the vessel could drop into the sea as well as other debris and hazards. Therefore, a USV was chosen because of the benefits it could bring. A safe operation which included connecting a towing line to the USV as back up in case anything happened. Within just two days, the WAM-V 16 was demobilized after safely completing its mission. The rapid response also enabled Dong Fang Offshore to complete the salvage operations within a week of arriving on site. On Jan 25, authorities at Carnival shared an updated statement: "Carnival Freedom’s team promptly investigated and cleaned an oily sheen around the ship after notifying Port Canaveral and Coast Guard officials (on) Thursday. Internal systems and a thorough survey of the ship’s exterior conducted by a dive team showed no discharge from the ship. All regulatory requirements were followed, and the USCG cleared the ship for departure on Thursday night. Carnival Freedom is sailing a Bahamas cruise."
CMA CGM SINNAMARY
On Jan 24, 2025, Salvamento Marítimo has assisted the 'CMA CGM Sinnamary', which had suffered engine problems amid stormy weather at the southern end of the Vigo Estuary and requested help. The tugs ‘María Pita’, ‘Doctor Pintado’ and ‘Helechosa’ were deployed to the ship, which was situated between the southern island of Cíes and Monteferro. The vessels left the port a few minutes before 10:30 a.m. and reached the ship at around 11:00 a.m. The container ship had since regained a speed of 8.3 knots, so it did not need to be towed and entered the estuary escorted by the three ships. It sailed again on Jan 25, next headed to Rotterdam. MEDSTRAUM
The 'Medstraum' was taken out of service in Stavnager after its battery capacity dropped to 84 percent on Jan 2, 2025. Now a new electric vessel is on the way. Prior to the phase-out, the operator Fjord1 experienced that the battery was unable to store enough energy. This led to more frequent charging and delays in the route service. This has created a mood of rebellion on Vassøy and the other city islands.
