On Jan 21, the 'Sparta II' has entered the military unit of the port of Tartus, where the Russian group of troops were waiting for evacuation. It was deemed likely that the ship will retrieve part of the Russian military equipment and machinery gathered in Tartus from across the country. The 'Sparta II' broke from its drift and headed toward the portat approximately 6 p.m. (GMT +3), arriving in Tartus at 8:35 p.m. From Jan 5-8, the ship had been circling approximately five nautical milesoff the coast of Tartus. On Jan 8, reports confirmed that the new Syrian authorities had begun patrolling the waters in the area. Around the same time, the 'Sparta II' moved to a distance of 15.6 nautical miles, just beyond the 12-nautical-mile limit of Syria’s territorial waters. The vessel then shifted closer to the shore once again. The vessel was an active part of the so-called “Syrian Express” and transported weapons to Syria and since 2022 back. The owner is the Russian company Oboronlogistika. In particular, in Aug 2022, the transportation of S-300 air defense systems from Syria to the port of Novorossiysk was recorded. On Dec 13, 2024, the 'Sparta II' left the Russian naval base in Baltiysk. On Jan 6, 2025, it was spotted in the Mediterranean Sea in the Tunisian EEZ, and on Jan 8, the ship had arrived off the Syrian coast. On Dec 24, 2024, the 'Ursa Major', another Russian ship participating in the “Syrian Express,” sank off the coast of Spain after an engine room explosion in international waters in the western part of the Mediterranean Sea, between the city of Aguillas and the city of Oran. Other Russian vessels off the Syrian coast included the frigate 'Admiral Gorshkov' as well as the landing ships 'Ivan Gren' and 'Alexander Otrakovsky'. On Jan. 6 the Russian landing ship 'Admiral Grigorovich was positioned about five miles from the port of Tartus.

MARCO POLO
The Blekinge County Administrative Board has received SEK 1.6 million in compensation from the TT-Line AB for costs related to the oil spill from the 'Marco Polo', which had run aground on Oct 22, 2023, northwest of Hanö outside Karlshamn, en route from Trelleborg to Karlshamn, according to an agreement that was finalized in early January. The grounding had resulted in a large oil spill in the Pukaviks bight in Blekinge, which according to the Coast Guard amounted to 60 tons. The spill hit animals and nature hard in an already sensitive environment. The Blekinge County Administrative Board had a constructive dialogue with both TT-Line and their insurance company. With this agreement, it was considered that the damages case has now been closed. The compensation included, among other things, costs for salaries and staff work, coordination and collaboration between actors in the county, work with regulations, marking of stay bans and environmental surveys. The County Administrative Board had previously received 450,000 SEK in compensation. With this agreement, an additional 1,150,000 SEK has been added, which means that the total compensation from the shipping company amounted to 1,600,000 SEK. Of these, just over 600,000 SEK were consultancy costs for an environmental survey. The cleanup work along parts of the Blekinge coast is still ongoing.

MY AMADEA
The USA are going to court to prove that sanctioned billionaire Suleiman Kerimov is the real owner of the 'Amadea'. The yacht, which costs US taxpayers almost $750,000 a month to maintain and insure, is being held in custody in San Diego while the legal proceedings are ongoing. The legal battle stems from the work of the Justice Department's KleptoCapture task force, which targets assets including yachts, planes, and luxury real estate of wealthy Russians who have been sanctioned over the invasion of Ukraine. The US, UK, and EU have imposed sanctions on oligarchs and others accused of helping the Kremlin. The United States claims that Amadea is owned by Kerimov, the 17th richest man in Russia, with a net worth of about $9.3 billion. But Eduard Khudainatov, the former head of Russia's oil producer Rosneft, claims he is the real owner. Lawyers for Khudainatov and his Millemarin Investments claimed that he spent $232 million to build the yacht and that it has belonged to him all along. The Ministry of Justice argues that Khudainatov is only a fake owner designed to conceal Kerimov's ownership of the yacht and has no legal grounds to complain about what is happening to it. The US District Judge Dale Ho is holding a hearing this week on the Khudainatov case and the question of who owns the yacht. In the government's opening statement, Justice Department lawyer Rachel Dowd told that the evidence would show that Khudainatov ordered the 'Amadea' and then sold it in 2021 to Kerimov through intermediaries, after which the Kerimov family used the yacht exclusively. The crew recognized the Kerimovs as the owners and the family had plans to refit the vessel. If the United States fails to confiscate the yacht, the cost of its maintenance will be lost. So far, the government has not been able to get court approval to sell the ship and avoid financial risk. Adding the $5.6 million in dry-dock repairs that the US planned to carry out last year, the total cost to taxpayers was about $20 million, according to a US statement in 2024, and is now closer to $30 million. The costs represent only a small fraction of its value and are not unusual for such a yacht. When the 'Amadea' was arrested, the US estimated its value at $300 million or more. An independent appraiser estimated its fair market value at $230 million.
