LES ALIZES
A major fire broke out on the afternoon of Jan 23, 2025, on board the 'Les Alizés', which was moored at the Wagenborg Terminal in Eemshaven. The fire, which started in a technical room on the ship, could be brought under control. The fire started in batteries that were on board the ship. The crew members immediately started extinguishing work, but soon discovered that the batteries could not be extinguished. To prevent further escalation, in collaboration with the crew, the fire brigade disconnected the batteries and removed them from the ship. The batteries were submerged in water basins on the quay to minimize the chance of re-ignition. This process was a crucial part of the extinguishing operation. KHATANGA
The 'Khatanga', which has been docked and deteriorating in Gdynia for over six years after failing a Port State inspection, broke lose on Jan 12, 2025. The inspection had uncovered serious structural issues and crew competency concerns, forcing the vessel into indefinite limbo. Abandoned by its owners, the Murmansk Shipping Company, after their 2020 bankruptcy, the tanker has been left to rot without so much as a skeleton crew to keep it afloat. The situation came to a head during recent winter storms when the tanker broke loose from its moorings twice, on Dec 15, 2024, and then on Jan12 – prompting frantic efforts to secure it. The Seaport Authority has been fighting a legal battle to seize the ship, citing years of unpaid port fees racked up by its absentee owners. Adding the Murmansk Shipping Company to international sanctions lists is one potential move, which would allow Polish authorities to take control of the vessel. Brokers have even listed the 'Khatanga' for sale.

The ship also passed several underwater cables. At the Anchorage in international waters east of Frederikshavn it was monitored by a patrol boat of the Danish Navy.

REGINA-K
On Jan 24, shortly after 8 a.m., work began on installing the new lock gate wings in Müden. The gate wings had to be loaded onto a truck with the help of a crane for the last few meters to the lock chamber. The truck slowly reversed towards the chamber and another crane then lowered the gates. One of them weighs around 41 tonnes. It was important when installing that the two wing gates fitted exactly into the lock chamber. Around 40 employees were involved in the installation work. In the next few days, the technology will be installed so that the gate can open and close properly. The first test locks are due to begin in about a week. The new lock gate with two gate wings has stored been on a cargo ship at the lock in Müden for a week. Before that, it spent two days on the Moselle from Trier to Müden. That's where the two wings, which together make a steel gate 12 meters high, 14 meters wide and weighing around 80 tons, were constructed in the recent weeks. The old gates will be transported back to Trier. What can still be used from the swing gates will be recycled and the rest will be scrapped. The ' Regina K' has berthed in Haren/Ems on Jan 18.
