Cleaner fatally injured by watertight door
On the morning of Sep 24, the Tzelepi Port Authority was informed of the death of a 20-year-old crew member of the passenger-'Blue Star Chios'. The man was trapped by a sliding watertight door of the ship, resulting in a fatal injury. The watertight door connected a ro/ro deck with the engine room, and the msn was passing through the open hatch when it closed and fatally injured him. His crew mates immediately responded to the scene and retrieved him to the hatch; their efforts to save him were not successful. The hatch had to be manually activated, and would stop moving as soon as the actuation lever was released- Dtanding rules required the hatch to be fully open before passing through it to prevent any risk of getting caught. It is unclear why the door mechanism stayed activated and continued to close on the man. The ship, which was on a scheduled route from the port of Rhodes to the ports of Chalki-Diafani-Karpathos-Kassos-Anafi-Thira-Piraeus, sailed to the port of Piraeus, where the man was picked up by an ambulance and taken to the “Tzaneio” General Hospital of Piraeus, where he was pronounced dead. The 1st Port Department of Tzelepi of the Central Port Authority of Piraeus, which was conducting the preliminary investigation, arrested the Master and the 1st Engineer of the ship, for violation of article 302 of the Criminal Code “Manslaughter by negligence”. The two arrested were brought to the Piraeus First Instance Prosecutor's Office and temporarily released, while a preliminary examination was ordered. The victim was an engineering student, and had been aboard the ship as a wiper since Sep 15. He was properly certified for basic training, and had undergone familiarization while boarding the ship. The accident was the second aboard the 'Blue Star Chios' this month. On Sep 18, a minor aboard the ferry sustained an electric shock after coming into contact with the cable for a spotlight on deck. The child was in stable condition and was transported to a hospital in Karpathos for observation.
