VOLCAN DE TIMANFAYA
Due to the strong winds with gusts of of 80 knots and heavy rains in the Bay of Cadiz, the “Volcán de Timanfaya” has broken its stern moorings in the port of Cadiz on the morning of March 8, 2025, and has hit the ferry “Villa de Tazacorte” (IMO: 9399325), causing damage to its hull and paint. The RCC of Salvamento Marítimo in Cádiz mobilized the SAR ship 'María Zambrano' and contacted the port authorities, which mobilized pilots and two more tugs. The situation could be brought back to normal. The “Volcán de Timanfaya” was undergoing engine maintenance at the time of the incident.
MSC BALTIC III
The Canadian Coast Guard remained focused on the fuel aboard the 'MSC Baltic III' and the prevention of environmental damage. While there was daily activity, weather and ice conditions were impacting the operations about 50 % of the time, and many days teams are not able to get aboard the vessel. The focus was not on speed but on minimizing the impact of the incident. The operation may involve a combination of overland and a barge alongside first to remove the fuel oil and then the cargo. Lose ice has clogged the remote cove An ice class tug and barge arrived in Corner Brook carrying tanks some of which will be put onshore for eventual use as they remove the approximately 1.7 million liters of heavy fuel and marine gas oil onboard. The fuel oil in the tanks will need to be heated before it can be pumped off the ship. However, the salvage teams have determined the cranes aboard the ship are operational which will be helpful for the cargo operations. The Coast Guard believed the majority of the required equipment was now onsite for the operation. Accessing the vessel from the shoreside with heavy equipment requires upgrades to a road into the area. The operation is in the final approval stages from Canada for the roadwork. A draft plan showed that it would take approximately two weeks of work to make the road usable for the trucks and other equipment. The salvage operation might also build a walkway to the bow of the vessel to increase access. The salvage teams have confirmed that the vessel has significant hull and structural damage although it is now resting solidly on the seabed. There is flooding in the three of the holds, the tanks, and the engine room.

NATO WARSHIP F101
The "Álvaro de Bazán" was monitoring the movements of the Russian submarine "Krasnodar" of the KILO II class, in the waters of the Eastern Mediterranean. as well as the tug 'Evgeniy Churov', which has accompanied the submarine in its transit to the port of Alexandria (Egypt). The monitoring of the vessel ended when both Russian ships separated to each take a different course. Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine, NATO forces, especially maritime forces, have been closely following the movements of Russian units. In addition to the traditional deterrence missions of the Alliance's permanent naval groups, there has been increased surveillance of Russian ships transiting through the waters of the Mediterranean, the Atlantic or the Baltic near sovereign spaces. Spanish ships have been integrated into these groups, which join other allies to guarantee security in these waters and, in addition to exercising this deterrence, act as NATO's naval spearhead in the event of any crisis. Currently, three are integrated into two of the four naval groups of the Alliance: the minesweeper "Duero" in the mine countermeasures group, SNMCMG-2 and the Combat Supply Ship BAC "Patiño" and the frigate "Álvaro de Bazán" in the surface group, SNMG-2 Report with photo: https://www.larazon.es/espana/defensa/buque-armada-vigila-cerca-submarino-ruso-mediterraneo_2025031067ceb57539a0dc0001e70165.html.
MARCO POLO
Since the 'Marco Polo' ran aground in Hanö Bay on Oct 22, 2024,, the municipality of Sölvesborg has invested significant resources in removing the heavy oil from beaches and nature. Most of the oil is now gone, but traces of pollution are still appearing and could cause problems. A total of 60tons of heavy oil were spilled, which led to a major environmental disaster with dead seabirds and injured marine mammals. Despite the fact that the most urgent efforts are complete, the Sölvesborg municipality continues to find oil lumps and stains. In mid-March, it will intensify the work more and go through the stretches once more. The clean-up effort has cost approximately SEK 55 million, mainly financed by the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency. The shipping company TT-Line paid SEK 1.6 million to the County Administrative Board in Blekinge. Some areas are already open to visitors, but the formal end date is decided by the Blekinge West Environmental Association. If more oil is found afterwards, the municipality will still move out again. On the islands nearby, stained nesting sites have been cleaned, but more follow-up is expected with a time horizon of five to ten years.
