YAVUZ NAZ

Casualty

On July 13, 2025, at 4.08 p.m. a fire broke out in the engine room of the 'Yavuz Naz', en route from Marmara Island to Tekirdağ, northwest of Marmara Island with 207 passengers and crew members and 70 vehicles on board, prompting an emergency response from Turkey's Directorate General of Coastal Safety (KEGM). The Coast Guard dispatched the "TCSG-313" and "KB-70" to the scene. The captain reported that the fire was isolated in the engine room, which was, howver, filled with smoke, and the engine had to be shut down. The lifeboats 'Kiyem 4' and 'Kegm 6' were also deployed to the scene and started cooling operations. The fire could be contained, and no injuries were reported. Besides the Coast Guard boats, three tugs from the Tekirdağ Port Authority, one tugfrom Marmara Island, and the passenger ferries 'Öz Kaptan 1'-1 and 'Ömer Kaptan 3' were dispatched to the area for a possible evacuation. The ferry was taken in tow to Marmara Island by the ferry 'Öz Kaptan 1', where the passengers were safely disembarked at the Marmara pier. An administrative investigation has been launched into the incident by the Bandırma Regional Port Authority. NIKA SPIRIT

Sold/Decommissioned

Ukraine’s National Agency for Tracing and Asset Management (ARMA) has completed the sale of the ' Niks Spirit', that was alleged to have been involved in a 2018 incident in which Russia arrested Ukrainian Navy sailors. The vessel was seized the following year and was sold to raise cash for Ukraine’s economy. The arrest and sanctions against the tanker were officially lifted by the courts. ARMA petitioned to release the vessel, reporting it has completed an auction and sale of the tanker to a Ukrainian entity, which was the successful bidder in an online auction that was completed in April. The vessel was seized in July 2019 while at the port of Izmir on the Danube. Ukraine alleged the ship had the same IMO ID number as the tanker 'Neyma', which had been at the center of the 2018 incident near the main channel at the Kerch Strait Bridge. The 'Neyma' claimed to have grounded, but Ukraine asserts it was used to block the channel to coincide with the passage of three Ukrainian naval vessels from Odesa to the port of Mariupol. The vessels were attacked by Russian forces, which boarded the ships and seized 24 Ukrainian crew members. The Russian authorities charged them as civilians for violating the Russian border. The ARMA took custody of the tanker after the invasion and in 2023 reported it had selected a manager to operate the 'Nika Spirit'. The agency later decided to sell the ship to raise badly needed funds for Ukraine. ARMA reported at the time that, given the need to replenish the state budget, it was going to focus on the sale of assets. The courts approved the sale process in late 2024. An independent auditor, however, told ARMA that the vessel was 80 % worn out, and said the restoration would require as much as $480,000. The anticipated price at auction for the vessel was set at just $57,500, but with four active bidders, the sale concluded at $153,000. The court found that the sale had been completed in good faith at an open auction, and lifted the arrest against the tanker.

GLOMAR VENTURE

Casualty

The Dutch Safety Board has concluded its abbreviated nvestigation into the alision of the 'Glomar Venture' with an offshore wind turbine of Vattenfall, located 18 kilometers off the coast of Zandvoort, on April 21. The results will be published later this year in the Shipping Accident Report. There was no reason for a comprehensive investigation. A key reason for an abbreviated investigation was that, based on the preliminary investigation, no broad safety lessons to be learned from the incident were anticipated.. The 'Glomar Venture' had suffered significant damage to its bow and has since been repaired at the Damen Shipyard.

VOLCAN DE TENO

Casualty

The "Volcán de Teno," suffered a breakdown on July 12, 2025, and has remained sidelined in San Sebastian de la Gomera since, with a domino effect of up to eight hours on the El Hierro, La Gomera, and La Palma routes. These delays were dealt with by the catamaran ferry "Volcán de Tirajana." The Armas Trasmediterránea Group sent a mobile message to its passengers informing them of the delay, although the estimated time did not match reality. In the case of El Hierro, where it was scheduled to depart at 5:30 p.m., it was reported that it would depart at 9:30 p.m. As the "Volcán de Tirajana" was in the port of San Sebastián de La Gomera at 8:00 p.m., there was no time for that to happen. In fact the "Volcán de Tirajana' arrived at the port of La Estaca on July 13 at 12:30 a.m., and set sail for Los Cristianos at 1:10 a.m., arriving 2,5 hours later.

WAN HAI 503

Casualty

On July 11 at noon, the 'Wan Hai 503' continuedto be towed safely by the 'Offshore Warrior', maintaining a position outside the Indian Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), currently located in pos. 07° 41.02'N, 074° 41.29'E. The vessel is making slow headway with a course of 080° and a speed of 2.3 knots. The weather remained moderately challenging, with prevailing winds from 285° at 22–25 knots and moderate to rough seas. The vessel's stability has been sustained, and towing operations are continuing smoothly. There wa light white smoke emanating from cargo hold Bay Nos. 33 to 37. This smoke was consistent with residual smouldering and heat retention in cargo hold No. 4, which has shown persistent elevated temperatures. However, there were no reports of visible flame or an escalation of the fire at this stage. The on-board salvage team has confirmed that five pumps were operational and that continuous dewatering efforts were ongoing. The engine room water level was now below the floor plate, and preparations were underway to inspect the suspected ingress path through the pipe duct as water levels allowed. The salvage operations continued to be supported by a coordinated fleet of response assets. The 'Advantis Virgo' was on standby near the casualty, equipped with Pyrocool, firefighting resources, and thermal imaging equipment. The vessel remained prepared for immediate deployment should any escalation occur or localized flare-up be detected. The 'Water Lily' was actively engaged in logistical support, including personnel transfers, movement of firefighting material, delivery of provisions, and standby for assisting salvage operations. Salvage personnel were rotated and resupplied via the 'Water Lily' during the early hours of the day. The 'Saksham' was positioned in proximity for fire watch and possible reboarding, particularly in anticipation of inspections or firefighting action. The tug was also perpared for salvage assistance and has previously delivered equipment including SCBA sets and high-capacity pumps In addition, the 'Nand Saarthi' was scheduled to reach Kochi on July 13, expected to relieve the 'Water Lily' on site by the evening of July 14 for potential redeployment during the ongoing southwest monsoon season, where its availability may be urgently required elsewhere. The firefighting and dewatering strategy wa yielding gradual but consistent progress. Thermal imaging has shown a downward trend in the overall heat signatures, particularly in cargo holds Nos. 2, 4, and 5. Cargo hold No. 4, previously the site of recurring flare-ups and suspected plastic resin cargo combustion, now were showing temperatures stabilizing in the 90–100°C range, though localized hotspots remained under observation. Hold No. 5 continued to retain residual heat despite the prior release of CO₂, due to the compartment being sealed with limited ventilation. This containment has prevented the complete dissipation of superheated gases. Temperatures in Hold No. 5 remained elevated (~130°C), and further cooling measures were under review. Hold Nos. 1, 2, and 6 were currently assessed to be within acceptable thermal limits, indicating no active combustion. No significant flames have been reported in the past 48 hours. CO monitoring levels remained elevated around some cargo holds, and salvors were using portable sensors and spot-checks to manage atmospheric conditions. Due to container collapse and obstructed access, a full inspection of tunnel spaces and enclosed sections has not yet been completed. Entry into such areas was subject to formal risk assessments and weather permitting. Dewatering operations were progressing positively. The use of multiple pumps, including submersibles, hydraulic units, and air-operated devices, has led to a steady reduction in the engine room water level. Once completely drained, an inspection of the suspected ingress route from cargo hold No. 3 will commence. At present, cargo holds No. 3 and 5 continued to show retained water, and soundings were to be repeated after further drainage. The Port of Refuge coordination continued. A formal document package has been submitted and was under review. The Directorate has reiterated the importance of progressing toward a definitive operational conclusion, either through approved entry into a Port of Refuge or positioning into a more sheltered and secure zone beyond the EEZ.

DETTIFOSS

Casualty

The 'Dettifoss', en route ffrom Reykjavik to Nuuk, suffered a main engine failure on July 9, 2025, at around 2 p.m. UTC and was disabled and adrift in the North Atlantic approximately 390 nautical miles southwest of Iceland (Lat. 61.3867 Lng. -35.6133). The crew and the vessel were in no immediate danger as the weather was calm in the area. The Iceland Coast Guard deployed the patrol vessel 'Freyja' (IMO: 9455105) to the scene, which reached the casualty on the night of July 10 amd took it in tow to back Reykjavik for inspections and repairs. The ship was finally pulled back into the port of Reykjavik on July 12. The 'Dettifoss' is deployed in a joint service with Greenland’s shipping company Royal Arctic Line, sailing between Aarhus and Helsingborg, Bremerhaven, the Faroe Islands, Iceland and Greenland. MATTHEW TT

Misc. for ports and Vessels

Over the last two years the 'MAtthews' has been moved across the port of Cork on a number of occasions. The job of maintaining and relocating the vessel has led to noise complaints from residents in the area. Whenever the ship is moved, tugs are used to guide it across the river at a cost of around €30,000 per move. The cost to the state of keeping the ship maintained has now surpassed €9.3 million, with engines running all day to keep equipment in working condition so that it can eventually be sold. The state was obliged to hold the ship for the duration of criminal proceedings against the crew, though it was released by the courts at the end of 2024. Now a bidder for the ship has been identified by the Revenue Office, but paperwork in Ireland as well as the register statte Panama will still take some time.

HADELAND

Misc. for ports and Vessels

On July 10, 2025, officers from the Rostock Water Police Inspectorate (WSPI) conducted an inspection of the 'Hadeland', which has been berthed in Rostock's fishing port since July 6. It was discovered that a disinfectant was being used during the operation of the wastewater treatment plant that did not comply with the requirements of the international MARPOL regulations.. While the ship was docked in Rostock, approximately 3 m³ of ship wastewater entered the port waters via this treatment plant. Criminal proceedings for water pollution have been initiated against the responsible Chief Engineer. The Rostock District Court set a security deposit of €3,000. The ship remained stationary in port as of July 14.

SEA LADY II

Casualty

The "Sea Lady II", which had caught fire shortly after arriving at the port of Saint-Tropez on July 10 at 7.45 p.m.. has finally sunk at its berth on July 11. It had taken more than 12 hours to extinguish the blaze on the afternoon. The 60 firefighters then started working to combat the pollution, which led to closure of shipping in the Old Port. The berthed ships in the basin were relocated. One of the yacht's tanks was punctured and began to spill into the waters. A system of anti-pollution booms was deployed around the wreck. Firefighters started pumping the 27 tons of fuel still stored in the tanks, and recovering the fuel from the punctured tank. On the morning of July 12 ship traffic was able to resume in the port since 10 a.m. Boats had to sail slowly as a safety precaution to avoid swirling waves. The water pollution has significantly decreased, and the test results were very positive. Marseille firefighters, mobilized for the anti-pollution operation, had skimmed 2,500 cubic meters of polluted water overnigh. The ten firefighters returned to Marseille on July 12 at around 6:00 a.m. Two SOS (Specialized Operational Sections) teams, pollution decontamination and technological risks, were deployed with four vehicles. The next step was to refloat the yacht as quickly as possible. Report with photo: https://fr.news.yahoo.com/saint-tropez-pollution-vieux-port-150646978.html

ETERNITY C

piracy

Two security companies, which have been searching for survivors from the 'Eternity C', have decided to call off the search for the 10 still missing sailors on the evening of July 13. Four crew members were killed during the attack, while 21 surviving crew members and armed guards fled the ship after the firefight. Of these, 10 were later rescued by security companies and passing ships, several of them after spending more than 48 hours in the water. Another crew member is believed to have died, while six were reportedly taken hostage by Houthi terrorists. The fate of the last four crew members is unknown, and the search for them has now been called off. The Houthi terrorits attacked the 'Eternity C' because it allegedly has ties to Israel, despite the fact that it was Greek-owned and registered in Liberia. Israel has called on the US to resume its airstrikes against Houthi targets in Yemen, in response to the sinking of the 'Eternity C' and the possible kidnapping of six crew members. Satellite photos meanwhile showed long, trailing oil slicks from where the 'Magic Seas' and the 'Eternity C' sank,

MSC ELSA 3

Casualty

The Kerala High Court in India held its first hearing related to India’s nearly $1.1 billion compensation claim related to the sinking of the 'MSC Elsa 3'. The MSC’s lawyers called the claims “highly exaggerated,” while lawyers for the state government said the extent of the damages is “incalculable and continuing.” MSC was arguing that the state provided no evidence to support its claims, while it reiterated that there has been no significant oil leak from the vessel. It was highlighted that the oil sheen around the vessel was limited to within one nautical mile of the wreck. The state countered by saying that the recovery of plastic nurdles continues on a daily basis with reports that it has now reached 450 tonnes. The clean-up is ongoing and in part delayed by discussions over the best methods to be used. One local area is barring the use of seawater washing to separate the nurdles, although the authorities contend it has proven effective elsewhere on the coastline. The court papers also said that nearly 78,500 fishermen have been compensated for the loss of their livelihood. They contend the fish market has collapsed due to a lack of confidence. The fishermen received a financial award as well as a distribution of free rice. The state was successful at the court earlier in the week in having the containership 'MSC Akiteta II' detained pending the posting of a bond. The company argued for the release of the vessel while declining to post a bond. The state cites the ownership structure of the vessels in independent companies, contending that it is “highlighting a pattern of deliberate corporate structure to defeat potential claims.” The court ruled that the vessel, which has been detained in Vizhinjam port, has to remain in the port until a bond is posted. The court had previously briefly detained two other MSC vessels, the 'MSC Manasa F' and the 'MSC Polo II', during their local port calls until bonds were posted for cases involving private claims related to the loss of the vessel. The state was given two weeks to file additional supporting information for its claims, while MSC also asked for time to respond to the claims. The court scheduled a follow-up hearing about the detention and the claims for Aug 6. In the court papers, the state highlighted that the vessel was loaded with 643 containers when it went down, with reports that approximately 60 have washed ashore. Based on the manifests, they contend the wreck is releasing plastic pellets, oil, calcium carbonate, and other materials into the ocean. The Directorate General of Shipping, which is overseeing the salvage efforts, said in its recent report that there remains an intermittent oil sheen near the wreck, but divers in June capped the tank ports that had been seeping oil. A new salvage program with saturation diving is due to begin in August in an effort to pump the oil from the vessel, which lies at a depth of 167 feet.
