AMAR GLYFADA
Four people lost their lives as a result of a fire that broke out in the engine room the 'Amar Glyfada' on Aug 8, 2024, which was undergoing repairs in the Midia Naval Shipyard. Five fire trucks, a ladder truck, as well as two SMURD crews and a truck for multiple victims were assigned to the scene. Apparently there was no Gas Free certificate issued by the Romanian Naval Authority, which certifies that the particular compartment of the ship that needs to be repaired is free of flammable gases, and the work can be carried out safely. The ANR inspection is now only done at the request of the shipowner. As the procedure is expensive, shipowners rarely come with such a request. DELTA BLUE
On Aug 8 and 9, 2024, Houthi terrorists attacked the 'Delta Blue' 45 nautical miles south of Yemen in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. On Aug 8 an RPG exploded in close proximity at 2.03 p.m. GMT. A bright light and loud noise were observed by the crew. The RPG was apparently fired from one of two small boats, each with four people on board. The master reported a further attack by missile at 10:45 p.m. GMT on Thursday, which exploded in close proximity to the vessel. A third attack followed in the early hours of Aug 9, when the ship was the subject of a suspicious approach by a small boat and an unmanned surface vessel, or sea drone, also 58 nautical miles northwest of Hodeidah. The USV approached the vessel at rapid speed and guards on board displayed their weapons. When the USV continued to approach, the security team opened fire and was able to successfully destroy the weapon. A fourth attack has since been reported on the 'Delta Blue' on Aug 9 at 05:57 a.m. GMT with a missile landing nearby. Despite the string of attacks it suffered, the vessel and its crew are still reported to be safe and proceeding to the next port of call. There was no indication that the ship was connected to either the US, the UK or Israel, which are otherwise the Houthi militia's stated primary targets. In light of the attack, The British Navy's Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), urged all ships making the trip through the Red Harbor to be aware of any suspicious activity.

ULTRA GALAXY
While bad weather continued to hamper the salvage efforts of the 'Ultra Galaxy', officials from the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) launched the investigation process into the cause of the casualty. Under maritime law, Panama as the flag state of the vessel is leading the investigation while South Africa because it was affected by the wreck is assisting in the efforts. A team consisting of a surveyor and a technical expert from Panama will be arriving in the country and meeting with SAMSA. This comes after the investigators from Panama flew to the Philippines for interviews with the crew of the vessel, which have already been repatriated. There are several working theories that will be part of the investigation. Officials shared a few details based on their review of information and initial interviews with the crew. They were seeking to end some of the speculation in the South African media. There was nothing to suggest the ship had broken any laws. Some speculation has centered on whether the cargo shifted before the storm and was later exasperated by the high seas as well as possible mistakes in navigation by the vessel before or during the storm. A review of the logs showed the crew tried to alter course before the casualty of the vessel which had been sailing eastbound toward Tanzania. The salvage team has been able to determine the location of the remaining oil aboard the wreck. However, they require a window of a week of calm weather to proceed with the operation which will include heating the oil and siphoning it from the tanks. A platform supply vessel continues to stand by with the necessary equipment for the oil removal process. In the meantime, the shore cleanup continues, but they did not say if the vessel continues to leak oil. Representatives of the P&I Club are also on scene assisting in the salvage operation. They noted the focus currently is on the oil and environmental impact. A plan for the removal of the hulk will be determined in the second stage of the salvage operation.

The recent demonstration, which involved a B-2 Spirit stealth bomber, took place in July as part of the second RIMPAC SINKEX. The 'Monarch Countess' is expected to become a popular spot for fishing and diving, contributing to the area’s marine ecosystem and tourism industry. Coordinates for the new artificial reef are available on the Destin-Fort Walton Beach website.
