KAISER WILHELM

Casualty

On May 24, 2025, the 'Kaiser Wilhelm' with 116 passengers on board touched the bottom of the Elbe several times due to low water levels. At around 10:45 a.m., the first slight grounding occurred at the silted-up entrance to Bleckede port. The Elbe had a depth of only 5.32 meters there, which was a critical water level for the ship. There were several slight groundings, but it arrived safely in Hitzacker." For safety reasons, the steam engine was temporarily stopped to prevent water from entering the boilers. During the evening, on the return trip the paddle wheeler grounded again at river kilometer 550 near the northwestern harbour entrance of Bleckede,in the immediate vicinity of the ferry terminal. A sandbank blocked the ship as it reversed. The 'Kaiser Wilhelm' remained stuck for almost 30 minutes. Through precise maneuvering, Captain Reich finally managed to free the ship and turn it around.

MSC ELSA 3

Casualty

The Indian authorities were concerned of both oil and hazardous cargo pollution being released from the 'MSC Elsa 3' after it capsized and sank on a water depth of around 100 metres. A large oil slick was visible over the area where the ship sank went down. Multiple containers were spotted adrift in the water, some have since washed up on the Kerala coast. Early on May 26,, two containers were spotted at Thurayil Kadavu in Arattupuzha, Alappuzha. Locals discovered one of them around 6.30 am. The floating box later allided with the seawall and burst open, spilling packets onto the shore. The two containers remained joined together. In the Kollam district, containers were found near Cheriazheekal, Karunagappally, where one was seen crashing into the seawall. Three containers each were located in Neendakara Parimanam, Sakthikulangara, and along the Chavara coast. The 'MSC Elsa 3' had on board 25 containers of hazardous cargo along with 367 metric tons of fuel oil and 84 tons of diesel fuel. The Indian Authorities have deployed teams to monitor the area for pollution. Alerts to the public warned that oil may wash up along the shoreline, and people should keep distance from any containers that reached the shore. The authorities have launched an investigation into the incident. The Indian Coast Guard (ICG), currently engaged in containing the oil spill, has assessed that oil has spread over a radius of approximately four kilometres of the accident site. On the night of May 26 three ships used infrared cameras to overcome poor visibility to gauge the extent of the oil spill. NCL SALTEN

Casualty

There was suspicion that the grounding of the 'NCL Salten' near Trondheim occurred after a 30-year-old officer who was responsible for the navigation of the ship had fallen asleep, the Public Prosecution Service (OM) announced on May 23, The local police in Norway, the Trøndelag Police District, have arrested the second officer of the ship. The officer who was alone on the bridge of the NCL Salten admitted during questioning that he had fallen asleep while navigating the vessel. The police have no indications that a technical defect caused the grounding of the ship. There was nothing to indicate that an evasive manoeuvre was carried out just before the grounding. They found ship documents, including the deck logbook, which shows that he was on duty and alone on the bridge. The individual is being identified as a Ukrainian citizen in his 30s who was on watch at the time of the incident. He has been charged under Norwegian law with “negligent navigation,” with the police stating that the law requires a ship to be navigated in such a way that there is no danger to life and health, the environment, or material assets. The vessel had entered the Trondheim fjord normally at 16 knots. However, at the appointed spot where the vessel should have made a turn to starboard to enter Orkanger, it proceeded forward grounding after 5 a.m. in Byneset, some 24 kilometres west of Trondheim. The police report the investigation is proceeding looking at additional issues including whether the vessel was adhering to the work and rest requirements for the crew. The captain of the vessel as part of the standard procedure in the investigation has also been listed as a suspect in the case. On May 23, parts of the crew on board were interviewed. The focus of the investigation is to establish the sequence of events and determine how this incident could occur, as well as to assess whether the bridge was manned in accordance with applicable regulations. The police reported on May 22, that they had taken control of documents from the vessel and its log for review. The Norwegian Coastal Administration is also being kept apprised of the investigation while it is also responsible for monitoring the vessel and the salvage efforts. A survey has found damage to the vessel’s forecastle and some ballast tanks. The damage is not too severe that it will make the rescue more difficult but all the factors need to be accounted for in the salvage plan. Also, the damaged tanks are only filled with seawater so there is no immediate threat of pollution. The shipping company is responsible for arranging the salvage but the Administration will review the plan. It is noting that it can ask the shipping company for additional measures as necessary to ensure preparedness to prevent pollution or damage. The Administration expects the planning to require some time and it would then review the information. No timeline has been offered for when the vessel will be refloated. An initial attempt, made at high tide on the morning of May 22, just before 09:00 a.m., was unsuccessful. A second attempt, at 9:40 pm. was postponed. A landslide had been detected near the location of the 'NCL Salten'. ‘The area is known for its large amount of clay and this landslide can now be linked to the vibrations that occurred when the ship ran aground. When the ship ran aground at around 05:00, he said, the water level rose 8 to 10 metres from the coast,, pushing away a 100-metre-wide strip of beach. A nearby house in which three people were staying was temporarily evacuated as a precaution. Before the refloating of the ship can begin gain, several surveys of the seabed must be carried out. Geotechnicians have been asked to conduct further research, especially around the ship . The Shipping company North Sea Container Line said it was ‘pleased that no one was injured in the grounding and that everyone is safe. The Norwegian Coastguard attended with the 'Njord-W 333'. The tug 'Boa Brage' (IMO 9551894) was enroute to Trondheim with an ETA as of May 23 at 9 p.m. On May 26, the 'Boa Balder' (IMO: 9462342 ) was at the grounding site. NCL SALTEN

Casualty

After several landslides near the grounding site of the 'NCL Salten', the police have had to push away people who were standing too close. The municipality has discovered quicklime in the area, which could complicate the salvage, after the ship ended up on land just a few meters from a residential building on Byneset near Trondheim. Since then, a number of landslides up to 50 meters wide have occurred at the site and several people have been forced to evacuate. One home that is in the risk zone belongs to Jostein Jørgensen, who has been evacuated twice in recent days. Johan Helberg, whose house was almost hit by the ship, was not affected by the landslide. His home is built on bedrock, He even did not wake up from the impact. Instead, a neighbor woke him up at five on the morning. The heating pipe of his house was damaged. According to the municipality, the number of evacuees is at risk of soon increasing. The quicklime has been discovered at a depth of seven to eight meters under the soil layer in the landslide area. The Trondheim municipality, was in constant contact with the police, rescue services and geologists. The ship's shipping company will also conduct land surveys Work to salvage the ship has commenced on May 25. The first step is to remove the containers onto a barge. On May 24, at 2.30 p.m. the removal started. During the day14 containers have been lifted off the ship onto a barge, which had been towed to the grounding site by the tug "Boa Brage". The boxes were then taken to Orkanger. Another barge was en route which has space for 24 containers. Once enough containers have been unloaded, two tugs of 65 tons bollard pull each will start to pull the vessel off the ground. ALI AYKIN

Casualty

After the grounding of the 'Ali Aykin', the Swedish Coast Guard has arrested one crew member of the ship under suspicion of gross negligence in maritime traffic. The leadership of the preliminary investigation has been transferred to the prosecutor. The person was taken from the ship following the decision of the prosecutors on the afternoon. The Coast Guard remained at the scene with the patrol boat 'KVB 314' (MMSI: 265675230) for continued investigative measures, including in the investigation into suspected drunkenness at sea. Divers from the Coast Guard estimated that diving to examine the ship's hull and bottom conditions at the site would not take place on May 25 due to adverse weather conditions. The inspection that the Coast Guard divers were planning to make of the hull and the seabed where the ship has grounded will provide important information for the salvage operation and measures that may be required for a safe recovery .On the morning of MAy 26, diving work could finally begin. No oil has been released into the water. The risks of pollution may increase when a salvage operation begins. There is no forecast yet for when such an operation might take place. Before a salvage operation can begin, the salvage plan developed by the shipping company and the salvage company must be approved by the Swedish Transport Agency together with the Coast Guard.
