EAGLE S
An anchor belonging to the 'Eagle S,' has been located on a water deph of 80 meters and soon retrieved from the seabed, by the Swedish Armed Forces' multipurpose vessel HMS 'Belos', which is assisting with the investigation, on 'Jan 7. Finnish authorities have taken possession of the anchor, and the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) will begin analyzing it. The NBI suspects that the anchor was used in severing the EstLink 2 power cable between Finland and Estonia and damaging four telecommunication cables on December 25. The authorities previously said they found marks showing the anchor was dragged for almost 100 km along the sea floor. The 'Eagle S' had also sailed above a telecommunications cable in the North Sea above the Wadden Islands for several hours a year earlier, an examination of the AIS signals showed. The 'Eagle S' sailed in a northeasterly direction on the North Sea on Nov 24, 2023, and suddenly changed course. The ship sailed southeast until it arrived at a location about 50 kilometres above Terschelling in the evening, where the transatlantic data cable Atlantic Crossing 1 is located, which connects the USA with the UK, Germany and the Netherlands. That evening, the 'Eagle S' sailed back and forth above the sea cable for about two hours at low speed for unknown reasons. The tanker may remain in Porvoo the whole winter as it lacks ice classification and will soon be unable to leave the area without assistance. 24 deficiencies were previously discovered during inspections on board, including fire alarms and sanitation, and the vessel may be classified as unseaworthy by Traficom until the deficiencies are addressed at a shipyard, where it will at least get a new anchor. There are many investigations and measures to be completed and the Finnish authorities are doing so according to the manual, which could take several months. The cargo consists of 35,000 tonnes of unleaded petrol and is worth around 20 million euros. It is not owned by the shipping company and has probably already been sold, but at the moment the cargo is not allowed to be moved due to EU sanctions. The vessel is under seizure by the Central Criminal Police Office due to the criminal suspicions and Fingrid and Elisa also want to keep the vessel in order to get the cable repairs paid for. Eight people on the crew are suspected of crimes and are subject to travel bans. The missing anchor may remain somewhere along the tens of kilometers long tow track discovered in the Gulf of Finland. Underwater images had showed damages to the ship's hull that may be caused by the anchor chain. The location where the 'Eagle S' is anchored may be strategically well chosen because there is daily ship traffic there. This means that the ice does not become particularly thick. And if it does, a tug can drive around the 'Eagle S' and keep the ice away from around it. LINGEBORG
On Jan 7, 2025, at noon the 'Lingeborg', while sailing in the Lower Warnow fairway, suffered an engine failure with subsequent blackout. The ship was unable to maneuver and was drifting north towards the Baltic Sea due to the strong southwesterly winds on the river. The captain immediately carried out an emergency anchor maneuver. As a result, the freighter allided with two fairway buoys. The freighter's transverse position amid the Warnow fairway impaired the safety and ease of shipping. The Traffic Control Center of the Waterways and Shipping Authority (WSA Baltic Sea) immediately deployed the port tugs "Fairplay 55" and "Fairplay 64" to tow the freighter out of the fairway. At the same time, the patrol boat "Warnow" of the water police Rostock was deployed to secure the convoy. The freighter was brought back to the overseas port. where It had sailed shortly before. After about 60 minutes, the Warnow fairway was free again. Minor damage was caused to the fairway buoys. The water police inspection Rostock filed a ship accident report. A detention order was issued by the Professional Association for Transport, Postal Logistics and Telecommunications until the ship's class has been confirmed by the monitoring classification society. On Jan 6, officers of the Rostock water police had already subjected the ship, which was loaded with fertilizers, to a port state control. No defiencies were recorded.

REGINA-K
While the 'Regina K' is actually transiting the Mittelland Canal, the two prepared gate wings are still in the construction yard of the Mosel-Saar-Lahn Waterways and Shipping Authority (WSA) in Trier. They are the replacement for the gate at the Müden lock, which was completely destroyed by the ship a month ago. Ship traffic on the Moselle can only resume once the 12-meter-high gate wings, each weighing 40 tons, have been transported to the lock by ship and successfully installed. There was only a pure steel body thatwere in reserve. 16 employees worked a total of 1,600 hours to finish the two gate wings. The new gate wings were first moved into a hall and a tent, aligned and fitted with rail systems. Then hydraulic pipes, bolts and sealing systems were added. When a lock gate is normally replaced, the preparation takes around half a year. The new lock gate costs around 1.3 million Euros, The lock gate, which is 14 metres wide in total, is to be loaded onto a deck barge in Trier on Jan 13. Then a pusher tug will come for the transport to Müden, which will probably take two days. The installation is planned for Jan 24 or 25. The repair work on the concrete in the lock chamber should then also be completed. Lifting the gates in with the crane is a matter of half a day. Then they have to be adjusted and aligned. The Müden lock is then to go back into regular operation on Feb 1. EAGLE S
The Finnish authorities have completed the technical inspection of the 'Eagle S' the same day the lost anchor was recovered. According to the transport agency Traficom, the ship is in poor condition. The nspection revealed 32 defiencies. The deficiencies concerned fire safety, navigation equipment and ventilation of pump rooms. Several of the deficiencies were due to the safety management system not being observed to a sufficient extent. The same things have also been noted during previous port state controls. In addition, there are deficiencies in, among other things, how the crew members lives on board and the safety of the electrical system .Three of the defects are so serious that the ship must first undergo repairs which will take some time, partly because external assistance is needed. Traficom has investigated whether the ship itself meets international agreement requirements, while the Central Criminal Police is investigating the cable break, which is suspected of being a serious act of sabotage. The ship, which is suspected of having intentionally severed the Estlink 2 power cable, remained anchored in Sköldvik near Porvoo. DANIMEX 3
The 63-year-old Romanian skipper of the 'Danimex 3' was fined 1,500 Euros in a court in Middelburg. He did not speak the main language Dutch or English when he was sailing on the Western Scheldt. As a result, he followed instructions in the frame of international agreements for public waterways incorrectly, which apply to the Western Scheldt, the Lower Scheldt and the Ghent-Terneuzen Canal, among others. This concerns the main language that must be spoken. The main language is Dutch or English. The Romanian skipper made three mistakes, starting on Feb 16, 2023, when he sailed on the Ghent-Terneuzen Canal. He was given instructions to ensure a safe passage. He was only able to communicate in very poor German, which is therefore not permitted. On April 21, 2023, the skipper made another mistake. On the Western Scheldt, near Terneuzen, communication was made with the Romanian via the radio. Again, he was unable to speak fluent and understandable Dutch or English. On April 25, he sailed on the Western Scheldt, near Hansweert. Here too, the man was unable to follow the instructions properly, which could have endangered the passage. Again, this happened because he did not or barely spoke the language of the ship. The skipper was not present in court. The officer demanded 360 Euros each for the three incidents. Because the skipper has not paid anything so far, the judge imposed a fine of 500 Euros each on the skipper for the three incidents. A total of 1,500 euros, to be replaced by ten days in prison.
NIJMEGEN MAX
The 'Nijmegen Max' ran aground on a breakwater on the Maas near Roermond on the night of Jan 6, 2025, while the ship tried to leave the port of Roermond. The bow of the vessel remainedl stuck while the stern was still in the navigation channel. As a result, ship traffic between Linne and Roermondwas disrupted. Rijkswaterstaat was monitoring the situation. The master finally succeeded in refloating the ship in the run of Jan 7, and it returned to Roermond. However, part of the Maas remained closed for shipping due to high water levels. The grounding was the second accident of the 'Nijmegen Max' within a few months. On Sep 11, 2024, the ship had allided with the Willems Bridge on the New Maas.
