PIONEER
The sanctioned 'Pioneer' appears to be transferring its Russian cargo to another ship in the Mediterranean Sea, a sign of the lengths to which Moscow is going to circumvent US actions. The LNG tanker was sanctioned by the US on Aug 23 and was anchored next to another vessel about 19 nautical miles northeast of Port Said. That was s an indication that it’s executing an open water ship-to-ship transfer, which is rare for natural gas. The recipient vessel is the 'New Energy', which isn’t subject to restrictions. The cargo is the first to load from Arctic LNG 2, Russia’s newest gas export plant, which was sanctioned by the US in 2023r. In response to the US actions, Moscow is developing a shadow fleet of LNG tankers in a similar way it did for transporting crude oil and products. The US upped the ante last week by imposing restrictions on seven LNG carriers linked to Russia, including the 'Pioneer' and Ocean Speedstar Solutions, the India-based manager of the ship. The New Energy has been managed by Plio Energy Cargo Shipping since June and was previously suspected to be part of the shadow fleet due to its opaque ownership. The India-based Plio Energy was incorporated on June 20. Once the transfer is finished, the 'New Energy' may head through the Suez Canal to Asia, where there could be willing buyers of the Russian gas. It’s common practice for vessels carrying sanctioned energy to hide their location by switching off or manipulating their AIS. The 'Everest Energy', another vessel sanctioned by the US on Aug 23, was moving away from the Arctic LNG 2 facility, indicating that the vessel picked up a shipment. The ship was faking its location in the Barents Sea until Aug 26. Report with photo: https://financialpost.com/pmn/business-pmn/tanker-carrying-sanctioned-russian-lng-attempting-ship-transfer
DISNEY DREAM
The 'Disney Dream', which was supposed to call at Amsterdam on Sep 6, will be sailing past the port. The shipping company Disney Cruise Line feared that it would not be able to dock in Amsterdam 'due to problems with access to the port'. In recent weeks, activists from Extinction Rebellion have blocked the lock at IJmuiden in protest against cruise ships. Disney Cruise Line informed travelers about the adjusted travel schedule. In an email, the shipping company spoke of 'problems beyond our control', As compensation, the shipping company offered travelers a credit of 250 Dollars to spend on board. The ship, which departs from Southampton non Spe 1, will sail via Hamburg to Zeebrugge, where it will now stay for two days instead of one. Disney has not confirmed that the ship is avoiding Amsterdam because of actions by XR. The sea lock at IJmuiden was last blocked on Aug 24. The protesters stood or had chained themselves to the lock, in order to prevent a cruise ship from entering from the sea. Shipping traffic that had to go through the lock was delayed for about two to three hours. By early evening, the lock was open to shipping again.
ULTRA GALAXY
The removal of all remaining oil and fuel onboard the 'Ultra Galaxy' with the assistance of the Platform Supply Vessel (PSV) iwas no longer feasible. The salvage effort now focused on the removal of the wreck. The P&I Club issued issued a temder. and there was keen interest both locally and abroad. This was consistent with the authority’s directive to the vessel owners to have the wreck removed from the South African west coast on the Atlantic Ocean. Following extensive assessments conducted over the past few days, it has been confirmed that the MV Ultra Galaxy has completely broken up due to the severe weather conditions experienced- Over 500 tons of oil and fuel, as well as the fertiliser cargo, has been lost, thanks to the stormy weather and sea conditions. Much of the oil has spread out along the nearby beach where it was being collected. With respect to the type of oil and fuel on board the ship when she went aground, in addition to low amounts of hydraulic and related oils the vessel had 332 tons of VLSFO (low sulphur) and 180 tons of MGO in her tanks as bunker fuel. Before she started breaking up salvors were able to remove eight tonnes of bunkering marine gas oil from the wreck. On Aug 23 the SAMSA said that given the extent of the damage, the likelihood of any intact fuel tanks remaining on the vessel was highly unlikely. Inspections conducted by foot, drone, and helicopter on Aug 21 indicated that the oil on the mining beaches has been cleaned and that there is no visible oil slick or contamination along the beaches, extending as far down as the Olifants River mouth and 5km north of the wreck. The cleanup crews remained on high alert and were on-site in full force, with any resurgence of oil only being sighted on the beaches immediately in front of the vessel. Despite the successful cleanup of all oil that was deposited onto the beach on Aug 19, the cleanup teams will remain on-site for at least the next two storm cycles as a precautionary measure.
