MANAHAU
The offshore vessel 'MMA Vision' has arrived at Carters Beach to assist with the recovery of the 'Manahau' at Carters Beach on Sep 4 at around. It had left New Plymouth on the afternoon of Sep 2. A smaller tug, the 'Kurutai', was enroute from Napier and expected to reach Westport later the evening. All 11 crew members remained safe on board the 'Manahau' and have undergone welfare checks to ensure their wellbeing. The vessel was stable, the hull and all tanks were intact, there were no leaks and there was no immediate risk to the environment. The weather was good, the tides were favourable and the salvage team's plan to refloat the ship was on the track. Westland Mineral Sands have engaged an independent expert to help understand how the incident occurred, and theinvestigation was well underway too. Maritime New Zealand said the stranded barge had some deficiencies when it was inspected upon arrival in New Zealand in July, but it did not believe they were factors in its grounding. It was detained until the deficiencies found by the authority were rectified by the operator. A Maritime NZ investigation into the cause of the grounding was ongoing.
