An emergency taskforce has arrived in Russia's Krasnodar region as the oil spill in the Kerch Strait continued to spread a month after it was first detected. The team, which included Emergency Situations Minister Alexander Kurenkov, was set up after V. Putin called on authorities on Jan 10 to ramp up the response to the spill. According to the Federal Ministry of Transport, the "Eventin" has power again, wwhichmeans that the ship can now hold its position unassisted. The connections to the tugs have thus been severed, and the ship had dropped anchor. Since energy is needed on board to raise the anchor, it could be assumed that the ship's engines are also at least partially running again. According to information from the responsible Baltic Sea Waterways and Shipping Authority (WSA), the ship was requesting permission to leave. What will happen to the ship is now being clarified. The offshore tugs 'Detector' (IMO: 9298911) and ''Farmar Arion' (IMO: 9056789) were stationary in the vicinity. However, the "Eventin" cannot simply continue its journey. On Jan 14, 2025. the 'MHKL 205' lost the unloaded barge 'MArine Power 3036' it was towing, on the Mahakam River amid severe weather, en route to Muara Pahu. It arrived under the Mahakam Bridge at 12:20 p.m. WITA to await the bridge opening for passage upstream. At 1 p.m. the bridge was opened for passage. The 'MHKL 205' was fourth in line, following the tugb 'Danny 116'. However, before the transit began, strong winds with speeds of 20–25 knots accompanied by heavy rain struck the area, forcing the guidance team to temporarily halt the passage process. The 'Marine Power 3036' was caught by the strong wind, causing its bow to drift towards the riverbank. The 'MHKL 205' attempted to hold the barge, but the towing line snapped. The captain immediately contacted Samarinda's guidance authority via VHF radio and requested assistance from the tug 'Herlin' to secure the barge. Due to the strong outgoing current and high winds, the bow of the barge allided with a café building in the Samarinda Seberang area. Limited visibility caused by the heavy rain further complicated the efforts to regain control. The 'Dali' has completed the repairs of the damage suffered in the allision with the Francis Scott Key bridge in Baltimore in March 2024. at the Fujian Huadong shipyard in China 10 days ahead of schedule. The extensive damage to the vessel required the development of a comprehensive repair strategy and coordination between multiple departments. The repairs to the bow and forward section included the structural damage, the machinery, and anchors, as well as the thrusters. Work was also performed on the number one cargo hold and the yard reports overhauling the hydraulic and electrical control systems. It is unclear how the work addressed the numerous electrical system issues and make-shift repairs identified by investigators and the subject for the civil damage claims in Maryland’s courts. The 'Dali' had arrived in arrived at the shipyard on Nov 13 and has set sail from Bilixiang after a successful repairs and overhaul on Jan 12, 2025 and dropped anchor on Jan 13 in pos. 26° 25' N 120° 05' E, where it remained stationary as of Jan 15. Maersk’s online schedule was showing the ship arriving in Shanghai on Jan 17 and then making port calls in Ningbo and Gwangyang before proceeding to South Korea. She will cross the Pacific bound for Panama, Colombia, and Peru where she will arrive in late February. Maryland’s court schedule called for the civil case to begin taking witness statements and assembling evidence in 2025. The goal was to wind down all the preparations by early 2026 and move to pre-trial ahead of the first of two court cases. ARMOISE
On the evening of Jan 13, 2025, the departure of a migrant boat was reported to the CROSS Gris-Nez off the coast of Calais, which in turn deployed the 'Armoise' of the maritime gendarmerie patrol boat to search for the boat. Once located, the boat was monitored by the 'Armoise', which reported that the boat suffered an engine failure during the crossing. The 'Armoise' then launched its operational drome boat (EDO) and picked up the migrants who requested assistance. On Jan15, 2025, a crew member of the 'Chemway Arrow', en route from Saudi Arabia to Dongguan, needed to be medevaced. KPLP officers and a joint team consisting of Basarnas Banda Aceh, KKP Ulee-Lheue, ship agents, Immigration officers, and other relevant agencies, disembarked the 30-year-old Myanmar national in the northern waters of Banda Aceh, using the Basarnas Banda Aceh SAR vessel 'Kresna', which sailed from Ulee-Lheue Port at 06:30 a.m. WIB and went alongside the tanker at 07:45 a.m.- At 07:50a.m. the medical team from KKP, ship agents, and KSOP officers boarded the ship to assess the patient’s condition, followed by the Basarnas evacuation team. At 08:15 a.m the sick crew member, accompanied by the evacuation team, was transferred onto the 'KResna', which reached Ulee-Lheue Port at 9.30 a.m. An ambulance took him to the Zainal Abidin General Hospital in Banda Aceh for further medical treatment. The 'Viling Vela' will remain in Ålesund until the evening of Jan 16. The ship will not continue the voyage towards northern Norway to see the Northern Lights, as the cruise was advertised with, but instead visit the Hardangerfjord and Aurlandsfjord as well as Bergen and Stavanger. The reason given was the inspection of the engines as well as the stormy weather conditions.
EAGLE S
It was at the last minute that Finnish authorities boarded the 'Eagle S', the Finnish President Alexander Stubb said after the NATO summit in Helsinki on Jan 14. According to the president, the ship was only minutes away from causing further damage to the Estlink 1 power cable and the Balticconnector gas pipeline. when Finnish soldiers boarded the tanker: "If it had continued for another 12 minutes, the damage would have been far worse than the four cables that were already hit," the Finnish president said. The ship had already dragged its anchor for about 50 nautical miles, causing the cables on the seabed to be damaged. Following initial reports of disruptions, the Finnish Armed Forces quickly responded with a military helicopter and a boarding team. Authorities persuaded the crew of the 'Eagle S' to sail into Finnish territorial waters, where the ship was detained and taken to a safe anchorage for further investigation. The anchor was raised from the seabed and showed signs of damage. The technical investigation in Finland is nearing completion, and police was now focusing on analyzing evidence and determining whether there was intent to cause harm.

On JKan 14, 2025, the 'MTS Terramare', while involved in work involving connecting high speed fibre optic cables from Ireland to Brawdy Business Park on behalf of Vodafone, suffered engine failure and ran aground broadside in pos. 51° 51' N 005° 08' W at the Newgale Beach in Pembrokeshire, with waves pounding its deck and flashes of electrical arcing visible on board. The RLI boat 'Norah Wortley' was mobilized by the HM Coastguard at 6:28 p.m. and launched at 6:40 p.m. to Newgale where three to five foot surf waves were landing on the shingle ridge at high tide. The daughter boat was launched to assess the situation at the survey ship, whjch was broadside onto the pebbles with waves inundating the deck. Following a request for salvage pumps, the Coxswain Will Chant requested the assistance of the Little and Broad Haven D Class lifeboat to assist with pump transfer. Sea conditions ruled out this option so consideration was given to setting up a towline. Due to the size and weight of the stricken vessel, concerns over water ingress and its position on the pebbles, the decision was taken to not compromise the safety of the lifeboats and volunteer crew. A fire broke out on Jan 14, 2025, at 9 p.m. aboard the 'Hermes', which was transporting sand, near the lock complex in Merelbeke. A defective boiler caused smoke development and eventually also a fire. The emergency services, including the East Flanders maritime police and the fire brigade, were notified and attended on the scene. By the time the fire brigade arrived, the fire had already been extinguished. The fire fighters ventilated the ship and was stood down after an hour. No one was injured in the incident.
JAZZ
The "Jazz", carrying 50,000 tons of Russian crude oil, loaded in Vysotsk, anchored off Skagen on Jan 13, two days after had an emergency. Due to engine failure, the captain had to slow down. The tankerhas reported engine problems three times within two weeks, reduced its speed or stopped altogether. And each time the "Jazz" drifted close to the C-Lion 1 data cable, which connects Finland to Rostock and which was presumably cut in Nov 2024 by the Chinese freighter 'Yi Peng 3', and then by the "Eagle S", which was then detained by the Finnish authorities. In the case of the "Jazz", there are also other cables and pipes at the stopping points in addition to the C-Lion 1 cable, nine in total. The first case occurred on Dec 29 at 5:45 p.m. near Hankö. At the time, the still empty tanker was only sailing at 1.6 knots. The C-Lion 1 cable as well as three other communication lines and a high-voltage cable were located under the the ship. After taking on 50,000 tons of crude oil in Primorsk, Russia, the ship stopped again, on Jan 9 at 4:23 a.m., this time off the coast of the island of Gotland. Just two days later, it drifted again seemingly aimlessly, again in the middle of the night, this time northeast of Rügen, again close to C-Lion 1 cable and this time also to the Baltic Pipe gas pipeline that connects Norway and Poland, perhaps in an attempt at sabotage that failed or a test to test the readiness of NATO countries. The "Jazz" suddenly changed course north of Rügen in the early hours of Jan 11 and slowed down. The emergency tug "Baltic" was temporarily withdrawn from the disabled "Eventin" to assist the "Jazz". In contrast to the "Eventin", the crew of the "Jazz" reported after a few hours that their ship was manoeverable again.

On the afternoon of Jan 14, 2025, the Port Authority of Patras was informed by the Master of the 'Superfast I' that a 66-year-old foreign passenger of German nationality lost consciousness while the ship was in the process of being loaded in order to sail to the ports of Igoumenitsa and Bari. The man was initially given first aid by members of the crew, while later attempts were made to revive him by rescuers of the EMS, with negative results. In the end, he was pronounced dead by a doctor from the EKAV who went to the scene. His body was transferred to the General Hospital of Patras Panagia. The Central Port Authority of Patras, which conducted the preliminary investigation, ordered an autopsy to be carried out at the Forensic Service of Patras.
