On the afternoon of Dec 30, 2024, the Port Authority of Rhodes was informed by the Joint Search and Rescue Coordination Center (EKSED) of the Hellenic Coast Guard Headquarters that the 'Saonisos', which had sailed from the port of Rhodes to the port of Symi, had suffered a failure of the port side main engine northwest of Rhodes, without requesting assistance. The ship was operating a scheduled route from Rhodes to Symi, Tilos, Nisyros, Kos and Kalymnos, withot passengers and loaded with one truck and carrying 20 crew members. Due to the adverse weather conditions prevailing in the area, the ferry initially anchored in the bay of Kallithea, Rhodes. On the morning of Dec 31, it sailed under its own power to the port of Rhodes where it docked safely. The Central Port Authority of Rhodes initially prohibited the departure of the ship. After the repair of the damage and the presentation of a certificate of seaworthiness by the classification society that monitors it, the sailing ban was lifted and its voyages were permitted to continue.
