Tanker suffered engine breakdown

Tue Dec 10 09:39:14 CET 2024 Timsen

The 'Weda Pioneer' suffered a main engine breakdown en route rom Tanjung Priok to Weda on Dec 9, 2024. At 5:54 p.m., a sudden thumping noise was heard, and within 3–4 seconds, the main engine shut down automatically. A visual inspection of the main engine was conducted, followed by preparations to use the turning gear to check for blockages in the piston or crankshaft. During the turning process, lubricating oil was observed spraying forcefully from the indicator cocks of cylinders No. 1, 6, and 7, indicating oil leakage into the combustion chambers. Meanwhile, only cooling freshwater was observed leaking from the indicator cock of cylinder No. 4, which was replacemed and the injectors for cylinders No. 1, 6, and 7 were overhauled, including replacing the O-ring injector holders with spare parts available onboard. Investigations were ongoing to determine the root cause of the lubricating oil entering the cylinder combustion chambers. As of Dec 12, the tanker was NUC in pos. S 03° 01' S 126° 11' E.
