Container ship slammed into quay in storm

Tue Nov 30 18:48:27 CET 2021 Timsen

The 'MSC Alicante, en route from Piraeus to Ambarli, ran aground during berthing manoeuvring and drifted onto the quay at the Marport container terminal at Ambarli on Nov 29, 2021 at 3 p.m. Coastal Safety deployed the tugs 'Kurtarma 8' and 'Kurtarma 11' to refloat the ship, and KEGM sent divers too. The situation remained unchanged as of 4 p.m., fast rescue boats and technical teams were appointed to attend the incident scene and provide further assistance for the vessel and safety of Ambarli port. Strong south-westerly wind prevailed in the area, and the incident location was restricted for marine traffic. Ambarli port was closed to ships berthing. No leaks and pollution were reported. An incident investigation file was opened by the Harbour Master in order to investigate the cause of incident and the extent of damages. A detailed damage inspection was to be carried out by the Class and State Surveyors and in addition technical experts will also inspect the extent of damages to the pier.
