Brand new vessel suffered engine failure in Kiel Canal

Fri Sep 12 10:17:44 CEST 2025 Timsen

On Sep 8, 2025,at 2.35 a.m. the "Eco Triumph", during its first tranist of the Kiel Canal enroute from Cape Town to Swinoujscie with a cargo of wind mill blades, suffered an an engine failure in the Dükerswisch siding. The canal traffic control allowed the brand new ship, which was only handed over from the shipyard Jiangsu Dayang Marine Equipment Co., Ltd. to the German owner Briese on June 12 and had left Cape Town on Aug 10, to continue to Kiel only with tug assistance. However, because Fairplay did not have a tug available for the route, it was then announced that it would have to be turned around with two tugs and then towed back to Brunsbüttel, where it was moored at the railway station dolphins. The traffic control also suspended the night-time sailing ban for tugs. The ship had to reconfirm its class before it could continue its journey and finally left Brunsbüttel only on Sep 11 and finally arrived in Swinoujscie on Sep 12.
