INGER KATHRINE L610
Five fishermen who were accused of killing the 41-year-old Alf Villum Jensen on board the 'Inger Kathrine' last January could leave the Court in Holstebro as free men on June 13, 2024, after a jury acquitted them. The five men were indicted for, in the period from Jan 26 to 30m 2023, depriving Jensen of his liberty by tying his arms and legs together, and then killing him by, among other things, strangling and grabbing his neck and having committed extensive blunt violence against the man's head and body. Those now acquitted have always declared their innocence. The five crew members have unanimously explained that Alf Villum Jensen suddenly went berserk on board, probably due to delirium tremens, caused by prolonged abuse of alcohol. Among other things. After the five crew members succeeded in pacifying him, he stopped breathing and was subsequently declared dead on arrival at the hospital. The many injuries that were subsequently found on the deceased, according to the other crew members, stemmed from the time he went berserk and injuries he sustained during the passivation.
GODDESS OF THE NIGHT
Italian authorities take drastic action over the 'Goddess of the Night' which has berthed in Brindisi on June 8, 2024, for housing cops protecting US president Biden and G7 leaders. The roughly 2,000 carabonieri who had been providing security for the conference were facing unusable toilets due to sewage leaks, torn mattresses and multiple signs of flooding. There were waste and other materials everywhere. The ship is docked in Brindisi, where Joe Biden was set to land on the evening of June 12, 2024. The financial status of the cruise ship that was being used for police is still in flux. The ship has been seized on an order from prosecutors, with the Interior Ministry reserving the right to take legal action over the estimated $6.5 million charter. The ship was among a number of vessels exiting the Carnival Corp. during the pandemic, and the eighth which was acquired by Seajets' Marios Iliopoulos. Handed over in Feb 2023, initially it was renamed 'Mykonos Magic' but hasn't operated in revenue service. Renamed 'Goddess of the Night', it recently was announced to begin offering short music festival and party cruises in the Aegean for adults only starting July 15. BELLA 1
On June 10, 2024, the U.S. Department of the Treasury announced that the Department of the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) has sanctioned ten individuals, entities, and vessels, including two captains for illegally transporting sanctioned oil and other goods. The illegal activity included operations for the Sa'id al-Jamal network, Houthis Finance Facilitator. The OFAC has sanctioned the captain of the 'Olympics', formerly the 'Lady Sofia' (IMO: 9212759), a sanctioned vessel that continues transporting cargo for the Sa'id al-Jamal network. The OFAC stated that in mid-May, the tanker had used forged paperwork that falsely specified that the vessel was loaded with Malaysian cargo from a Malaysian Port at the end of April. Another sanction by OFAC was against the Captain of the 'La Pearl' (IMO: 9174660), also known as 'Elita', and her commercial manager is Saone Shipping Corporation, which is under sanction by the OFAC. The vessel offloaded the sanctioned cargo and is anchored off the China coast. On June 2, it sailed from Dongjiakou. The tanker 'Janet' (IMO: 9220952), actually en route from Malacca to Singapore with an ETA as of June 18, and 'Bella 1', which was anchoraed off Khor Fakkan as of June 12, were sanctioned for transporting sanctioned cargo for the Concepto Screen SAL Off Shore to southeast Asia. The OFAC has also sanctioned the registered owners of the tankers, the Lainey Shipping Ltd. and the Louis Marine Shipholding Enterprises S.A.
PS DREAM
On June 11, 2024, the Turkish master of the 'PS Dream' pleaded guilty in Louisiana Court for violating the Act to Prevent Pollution from Ships (APPS) and obstructing the proceeding by providing false records to the authorities. This came after the two tanker operators pleaded guilty last month. The incident came into light after a crew member reported to the U.S. Coast Guard Orleans by providing photos and videos that showcased oil being pumped overboard and trailing behind the tanker on Jan 11, 2023, just two weeks before the vessel arrived at the Port of New Orleans. On Jan 26, 2023, the U.S. Coast Guard conducted a routine inspection and found nine violations, including a lack of pollution prevention, issues with the onboard certificates, and problems with the gyro compass and the ventilation system of the vessel. The Captain of the tanker admitted to providing false logbooks to the Coast Guard during the inspection in order to hide the fact that the crew had disposed off contaminated oil waste from the vessel into the sea on Jan 11 en route to New Orleans, violating the international ship pollution regulations. The Captain also admitted ordering the crew to follow his instructions and dump the oily waste into the sea using a portable pump. As per the U.S. Department of Justice, the master pleaded guilty to two courts for violating the Act to Prevent Pollution from Ships (APPS) and obstructing the proceeding and now he is scheduled to be sentenced on September 10. He may be facing imprisonment for six years and a fine up to $250,000, or twice the gain or loss from the offence for the APPS. He also faces another five years in jail, followed by the same amount of fine for the obstruction charges.
