SOUNION
JWith fires still burning on the 'Sounion' as of Sep 10, the concerns were growing that the tanker could break up or explode, which would cause an environmental catastrophe in the Red Sea. After the ship was initially hit by missiles on Aug 21 and had to be abandoned by its 25 crew members. two days later, the Houthi terrorists detonated charges on the ship's deck, triggering new fires, which were still burning. If the cargo of 150,000 tons of crude oil would leak out, a spill of this magnitude could be virtually impossible to contain, contaminating vast expanses of seawater and coastline. The long-term impacts on marine biodiversity could be devastating, with oil residues potentially lingering in the environment for years or even decades. While private salvage companies had planned to tow the ship, anchored halfway between Yemen and Eritrea, they have deemed it unsafe to do so at this time, and alternative solutions were being considered. The fact thast the tanker is heavily loaded, immobilized and on fire, makes the situation extremely dangerous and unpredictable. The risk of a major environmental disaster is significant, as the ship could break up or explode at any time.. The Joint Maritime Information Center (JMIC), run by a multinational naval coalition that includes the United States and European countries, said it had not yet observed any oil spill, and that a rescue and firefighting operation was expected to begin this week. Small oil slicks whocj have been detected on some satellite images, allegedly had related to burnt oil after the explosions or coming from the engine. In a ruling last week, the Court of Justice of the EU rejected an appeal presented by Fred. Olsen S.A. over a sentence dictated by the General Courts of the EU in March 2018, whereby the continued exclusive use of the Port of Agaete on the Island of Gran Canary, by Fred. Olsen, constituted a subsidy by the Government of the Canary Islands to said shipping line.
MSC APOLLO
The 'MSC Apollo' was under investigation for being the source of an oil spill in the Algoa Bay.on Sep 7, 2024. After an oily sheen and oil-like blobs on the water were reported by a vessel traveling in the Algoa Bay region to the TNPA Vessel Traffic Service, a response craft was dispatched by the Vessel Traffic Service and confirmed the presence of oil on the water and pointed to the 'MSC Apollo' as the source. The spill could not be tracked further due to nightfall. The South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) approached the vessel’s insurers later that day to obtain an oil spill trajectory model from the International Tanker Owners’ Pollution Federation Limited (ITOPF) to predict the areas in which a further search should be focused. A meeting was held with the members of the South Africa Incident Management Organisation (Imorg), in which the objectives of determining the cause of the oil spill, the extent of it, and how to contain it were decided upon. During subsequent searches conducted in the areas predicted by the oil spill trajectory model no oil sheen was spotted, neither during a surveillance flight over the area nor during foot patrols of the beaches between the Port of Ngqura and the Sundays River. Following a subsequent meeting of the IMORG, the new objective of cleaning off the oil stains from the hull of the 'MSC Apollo' was agreed upon. The SAMSA reported that the cleaning operation could not be performed on Sep 8 due to inclement weather. The SAN Parks rangers, a volunteer group, have been dispatched to the San Croix island group to help any wildlife affected by the oil spill. The vessel’s insurers have agreed to send a drone to monitor the coasts, and the locals have been requested to inform the authorities should they spot animals that have been oiled.

Dar es-Salaam
In one of the biggest pushbacks against Chinese president Xi Jinping’s Belt Road Initiative Tanzania has suspended the construction of the $10bn Bagamoyo port project, citing the onerous financial conditions put in place by Beijing. The project, which broke ground four years ago and was set to be run by China Merchants Holding International, would have been the largest port in East Africa. Tanzania’s president John Magufuli has accused the Chinese project backers of presenting “exploitative and awkward” terms in exchange for financing. Chinese financiers set “tough conditions that can only be accepted by mad people,” Magufuli told local media. “They told us once they build the port, there should be no other port to be built all the way from Tanga to Mtwara south,” Magufuli told a delegation of business people at State House in Dar es Salaam earlier this month. “They want us to give them a guarantee of 33 years and a lease of 99 years, and we should not question whoever comes to invest there once the port is operational. They want to take the land as their own but we have to compensate them for drilling construction of that port,” he said. Magufuli also said the new Bagamoyo port risked undermining the ongoing $522m expansion of Dar es Salaam port that would enable it to triple its current capacity when complete by the end of this year.
