Ship nearly capsized in Russian port

During loading operations in the port of Plastun in the Ternevsky district, on the afternoon of Jan 16, 2025, at 2.45 p.m., the timber cargo on the deck of the 'Stepan Geyts' started to shift to starboard side and then slipped over board. The vessel heeled heavily during the cargo loss, but then righted itself, after most of the timer was in the water and more hanging over the side. Some crew members jumped onto the quay, fearing a complete capsize, while others stayed aboard. No injuries were reported, and the ship eventually regained stability. The Nakhodka Transport office estimated that approximately 1,000 cubic meters of the cargo fell into the harbour, which have been removed during the next days. The vessel, which is part of the Lesprom Network, operating a wood products marketplace, regained stability and returned to an even keel immediately after the cargo loss, but suffered damage. Preliminary reports suggested the timber cargo was not properly secured, leading to the imbalance. The ship was cited for deficiencies during a Port State Inspection in Dalian in Nov 2024 for issues including the structural conditions of ballast, fuel, and other tanks. The Transport Prosecutor’s Office was establishing the circumstances of the loss of the deck cargo. Tug capsized while assisting Stepan Geyts

The Russian port tug "MB-348" capsized and sank in the the morning of July 21, 2017, in the Olga Bay, Primorye, while assisting the "Stepan Geyts" during its unmooring operation. A failed towing gear was thought to have been the cause of an accident. The three crew members managed to leave the vessel and were rescued.
