Fire in cargo of scrap metal

Wed Oct 01 10:01:38 CEST 2025 Timsen

On Sep 26, 2025, at around 6 p.m., a fire broke out in the cargo of scrap metal aboard the 'Qing Hua Shan', which was moored at berth No. 109, Dock Gate 20S, in the port of Southampton, UK. All 22 crew members of the vessel have been accounted for, and were safely evacuated. No injuries have been reported. The fire was first detected in cargo hold No. 3. The incident briefly extended to hold No. 4 before being contained. The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service (HIWFRS) was alerted. More than 40 firefighters were dealing with the blaze, with seven fire engines and one aerial ladder platform. They managed to bringt the fire in the cargo hold under control, using 160 canisters of CO₂ Boundary cooling was applied to the vessel to prevent heat transfer to adjoining spaces. People were advised to avoid the vicinity of the docks. Firefighting operations were expected to continue throughout the night. The hatches remained closed until firefighting equipment, such as CO₂ canisters, can be replenished. A further inspection of the cargo holds was due to take place once the hatches have been opened. On Sep 27 at around 7 a.m., the incident was scaled down to two fire engines and one aerial platform ladder, ensuring continued monitoring while preventing any potential escalation. The crews remained on site, with a fire service presence expected over the next 24 hours. The ship had arrived in port on Sep 25 enroute from Montoir-de-Bretagne and remained stationary in port as of Oct 1.
