Yacht sank after retrofitted bow thruster broke off
On July 13, 2023, at 1:40 p.m. the 'Mrs. Jones' sank in the Scheldt estuary. The position of the yacht was initially unclear, and the KNRM rescue stations of Cadzand, Breskens, Hansweert and Neeltje Jans were alerted. A Coastguard helicopter and the Belgian rescue station Blankenberge were also summoned. Shortly after the lifeboats left, a passing ship reported seeing the sinking yacht in the Wester Scheldt estuary. The Breskens lifeboat was the first on the scene and found a life raft with three people on board nearby. The three were unharmed and taken on board the lifeboat 'Zeemanshoop', which brought them ashore in Flusjing , where they were examined by ambulance personnel. No one had to go to the hospital. The sailing yacht was en route from Middelburg to Blankenberge when it sank. Only the mast of the yacht was still above the water. The 'Multrasalvor 4' raised the wreck on July 14. The Bavaria C 38 sank after the bow thruster, which was installed by an external company, broke off. A lot of water quickly penetrated through the large hole in the forecastle left by the thruster, so that the only way for the crew was to abandon ship.
