Passenger ship grounded on sandbar

Fri Jun 29 10:13:20 CEST 2018 Timsen

The US Coast Guard and partner agency crews responded to the grounding of the "Yogi Berra" with 18 people aboard near Wind Hole Point, Jamaica Bay, New York, in the afternoon of June 28, 2018. Watchstanders at the Coast Guard New York command center received reports from the crew that the passenger vessel became stuck on a sandbar at 2:45 p.m., issued an urgent marine information broadcast and launched two boatcrews from the Coast Guard Station New York, along with a marine inspector and investigating officer to asses any damage to the vessel. The boatcrews arrived on scene along with the New York City Fire Department and the New York City Police Department marine units. There were no reports of any injuries or pollution as a result of the grounding. The passenger vessel refloated and was escorted back to Manhattan, where all passengers were safely disembarked. The Coast Guard marine inspector conducted a thorough assessment of the vessel’s condition, and the Coast Guard was investigating the cause of the grounding.
