Sunken barge refloated

Wed Jan 08 10:35:35 CET 2025 Timsen

The 'Wiljaco-F1' that sank on the Maas near Maastricht close to the Sluisdijk on the morning of Jan 7, has been salvaged. The work ship 'Prins 6' (MMSI: 244090404) had removed the 1400 tons of the cargo of limestone and used pumps to refloat the barge later the day. The ship traffic on the waterway, which was blocked from Ternaaien to Limmel has been released. The barge was transferred to the port of Stein. Rijkswaterstaat has been working for several hours to remove the barge. Report with photo: https://www.l1nieuws.nl/nieuws/2821504/gezonken-duwbak-vlotgetrokken-scheepvaart-hervat

Barge with lime stones sank on the Maas

Tue Jan 07 11:06:08 CET 2025 Timsen

The pusher combination 'Wiljaco'-Wiljaco F1', 1470 ts (EU-No.: 02013086), en route from Maastricht to Stein, ran aground on the Maas near Maastricht at the entrance to the Juliana Canal on Jan 7, 2025, at 7.45 a.m.. Due to the strong current on the river, the ships had threatened to allide with the weir at Borgharen. To prevent this, the master headed towards the shore. The pushed barge, which was loaded with limestone, then broke loose and sank. Some of the limestone ended up in the water. There is no danger to the surrounding area, because the cargo did not contain any hazardous substances. The work ship 'Prins 6' of Van den Herik in Sliedrecht, which was already in the area due to work on the Juliana Canal, started with the removal of the cargo. No one was injured in the accident. The skipper and his deckhand managed to get to safety. The shipping route was completely blocked from Limmel to Ternaaien. The fire brigade and Rijkswaterstaat were on site to see how the barge can be salvaged. The water level on the Maas is currently high and there is a stronger current, which could complicate the salvage. It is not yet known how long the blockage will last.
