Barge threatened to sink on Danube

Thu Dec 21 09:19:49 CET 2017 Timsen

On Dec 20, 2017, around 8 p.m. the "Wiking", 1215 ts (EU-Nr.: 05501670 ),suffered severe water ingress on the Danube near Schallemmersdorf in the Schönbühel municipality, Melk district. Possibly the ship had run over a river dam and was breached. The fire brigades from Gossam, Emmersdorf/Danube, Schönbühel, Melk and Spielberg/Pielach were alerted and attended with mobile dewatering pumps. Work was complicated as the ship was lying near the river shore, where the equipment had to be transffered aboard with ladders and work boats. The cargo hold, filled with steel coils, was flooded about 30 centimeters high. Within two hours the fire brigades managed to stem the flooding. and patch the leak temporarily. In the foremidday of Dec 21 investigations were launched.
