Chartership ran aground on the IJssel Sea

Thu May 17 10:11:40 CEST 2018 Timsen

In the afternoon of May 16, 2018, the "Vrijheid" ran aground on the Hop shallow on the IJssel Sea. The Dutch Coastguard was alerted at 4 p.m., and the lifeboats of the KNRM stations Medemblik, Andijk and Enkhuizen spent hours trying to get the three-master off and to tow ot to Enkhuizen. In addition to the size of the ship, the wind from the North with force 5 also created a considerable challenge. The lifeboats "'t Span" from Andijk and "Bernardine" from Medemblik were the first to arrive on the spot and assessed the situation. When it turns out that things were going well with the crew, they decided to wait for the larger lifeboat "Watersport" from Enkhuizen to establish a towing connection. After about 1,5 hour the ship, pounded by the surf, was pulled from the shallows, but it turned out that it had no propulsion anymore because the fuel had run out. The rudder also had become inoperative. Under the guidance of the lifeboats from Andijk and Medemblik, the "Vrijheid" was towed to Enkhuizen by the "Watersport" where it was moored at the Gependam jetty more than two hours later.
