Deadly accident at scrapyard
An accident aboard the former "CSL Virginia", which had been beached as "Virgin Star" at the shipbreaking beach of Chattogram, killed two workers and severely injured 13 in the afternoon of Aug 31 August at the Ziri Subedar shipbreaking yard. During scrapping operations on the ship, a heavy cable collapsed, hitting several workers. Aminul Islam, 35, and Tushar Chakma, 27 years old, lost their lives. 13 more workers suffered severe injuries and were taken to the Chattogram Medical College Hospital for treatment. Local authorities ordered the temporary closure of the yard. Investigations were ongoing. The container ship had been beached in Bangladesh ion Feb 9. It had been hit by the Tunisian ferry "Ulysse" when it was anchored off Corsica in October 2018 and breached beyond repair. Before setting sail for the Chattogram beach, the vessel was only allowed to leave French territorial waters, escorted by the French coast guard, upon claims that it would be repaired in Constanța, Romania. Instead, it spent a few weeks in a Turkish shipyard where it was renamed "Virgin Star" and changed registry from the flag of Cyprus to the flag of Liberia. It passed the Suez Canal on Dec 25, 2018, just days before the entry-into-force of the EU Ship Recycling Regulation.
