Tanker allided with bridge

On Aug 29, 2013, at 2 a.m. the "Veendam" allided with the Dorkwerder Bridge which is spanning the Van Starkenborgh Canal northeast of Groningen. The canal as well as traffic over the bridge were closed during the inspections by communal workers. The ship was not significantly damaged, but the bridge suffered was bent. At 5 p.m. it was re-opened afte rinspections were finished. The accident was caused by a communication mistake between the bridge guard and the tanker. Canal closed following tanker allision

At 2 a.m. in the night of Sep 14, 2012, the "Veendam" allided with the Dorkwerder Bridge spanning the Van Starkenborgh Canal at Dorkwerd, northeast of Groningen. The canal as well as the bridge had to be closed for ship and vehicle traffic while the damaged bridge construction was surveyed. The tanker was carrying dangerous goods but was not significantly damaged. The owners, the Verenigde Tankrederij Rotterdam, talked of a communication fault between the vessel's master and the bridge guard.
