Container ship outside the fairway

The 'Valdivia' got outside the fairway buoys and sailed straight towards the beach of Flushing on May 21, 2020. The ship only changed course at the very last moment. The ship was destined for the Steenbank to drop off the pilot. It was decided quite late to go via the Sardijngeul and the Oostgat instead of Westrond. The full ebb current made it a difficult maneuver in which the ship got outside the fairway in the Sardijngeul and thus closer to the beach than usual. The ship was able to continue the journey. The incident will be evaluated in the Nautical Commission for Safety in the Scheldt Area. The vessel had left Antwerp at 3.50 p.m. and was bound to Helsinki with an ETA as of May 26.
