Charges against master and officer due to violation of international environmental regulations

Thu Mar 13 21:43:59 CET 2014 Timsen

During a routine control on Mar 12, 2014, the police in Buetzfleth found an offence against MARPOL 2 regulations aboard the "Trans Emerald" and launched an investigation against the master and the 1st officer. On the way to and from Algeciras and Huelva cleaning water was pumped from the chemical tanks into the Mediterranean and the Gulf of Cadiz end of February. The sheer volume of chemical amounted to a total of around 1,000 liters. Protests of the crew and the Norwegian shipping company Seatrans Chemical Tankers which did not share the German legal opinion to the international rule for keeping the seas clean did not help: After completion of the investigation, criminal charges were made against both the captain and the first officer.
