Bulkcarrier damaged by breakaway barges
The bulkcarrier "Q Jake", the container vessel "Serena P" and the "Ocean Tomo" were damaged on Jan 21, 2016, when 22 barges from the United Bulk Terminal broke lose on the Mississippi at mile marker 54, near West Point a la Hache, and struck the vessels. The "Q Jake" spilled bulk soy beans into the river, but her remaining cargo has been secured. The vessels have been safely anchored. All 22 barges in the breakaway were loaded with coal and petroleum coke. They have all have been accounted for and secured, except one, which is was up against the riverbank. The Coast Guard was inspecting the position and status of the last barge to determine if it was a hazard to navigation.
