Drunk Russian captain sentenced to one month prison

Tue Jan 08 09:13:19 CET 2013 Timsen

The 60-year-old Russian captain of the "Sunny Maria" was sentenced to 30 days prison on Jan 7 by the Court of Helsingør. Moreover he is facing his deportation from Denmark and a travel ban for six years. He was also disqualified from acting as captain, mate or engineer on a ship in Danish waters for one year. In the evening of Jan 6 he had threatened to run the "Sunny Maria" aground with a BAC of 2,75 which was proved by a blood sample. The Danish SOK had several times in vain to contact him over the radio. In the morning of Jan 8 the "Sunny Maria" had resumed its voyage and was north of Bornholm, bound for Kaliningrad.

Drunk captain taken in arrest

Mon Jan 07 10:01:14 CET 2013 Timsen

In the evening of Jan 6, 2013, the "Sunny Maria" was detained afther the master of the ship was found heavily intoxicated north of Hornbæk while the ship was enroute from Ijmuiden to Kaliningrad. The captain was so drunk that he was unable to conduct an alcohol test. The arrest came after the Søværnets Operative Kommando several times unsuccessfully had attempted to contact the coaster Sun via VHF because it was lurching around. Finally Lyngby Radio to get through to the ship and got the captain to alter the direction of the coaster so that it no longer headed straight for the shore, and drop anchor off Hornbæk. But as the captain seemed to be drunk judgind from his radio transmissions, the police was sent out to the coaster. Two officers tried to get the captain to blow into a breathalyzer, but had to give up as he was so drunk that he was unable to finish the test. He could not gather enough air, so after several attempts, he was arrested and taken to shore where police has taken a blood sample from the result of which was expected in the afternoon of Jan 7. The coaster meanwhile remained anchored off the coast because the crew did not want to proceed without captain.
