Barge allision near Vicksburg
The US Coast Guard responded to an allision at mile marker 435.8 on the Mississippi River near Vicksburg, Mississippi, on Jan 21, 2016. The "Thomas K" allided with the Vicksburg Railroad Bridge in the afternoon. One ethanol barge sustained damage, the other 18 dry cargo barges remained undamaged. The Captain of the Port has issued a waterway restriction from mile marker 363 near Natchez, MS north to mile marker 438 near Vicksburg, MS. The restriction was for towboats pushing barges to not transit under the bridges. The Vicksburg Railroad Bridge remained closed until a safety inspection was completed by the Vicksburg Bridge Commission and the State of Mississippi. The cause of the incident was under investigation.
