On Jan 13, 2014, at 8.40 a.m. the master of the 10-m-f/v "Wassana Waree", Arom Sri-im, 58, and his two deckhands saved themselves only with a jump into the sea when the "Phuong Nam 69" ran over his boat which was anchoring 10 miles from Phuket International Airport. The cargo ship came at speed and crashed into the front of the boat, causing it to sink, and contiued without stopping. The castaways were rescued by other fishing boats. The cargo vessel which carried a cargo of 5000 tons cement simply continued its journey from Vietnam to Myanmar. The skipper of the fishing boat reported the accident to the Tachatchai Police Station and hoped for a compensation of 1.5 million baht.Officials at the Phuket Vessel Traffic Monitoring Centre at Chalong Pier have been notified of the collision. Officers caught up with the "Phuong Nam 69" and have moved it to Phang Nga Bay while an investigation was carried out. The captain of the vessel was taken to Tha Chat Chai Police station for questioning.
