Engine failure in Istanbul Strait
The "Tanais Dream", en route from Iskenderun to Novorossiysk suffered an engine failure during the transit of the Istanbul Strait at Kanlica point in position 041 09 21 N, 029 03 04 E, on Au 17, 2019, at 2 p.m. As the ship was drifting dangerously towards the shore, a Coastal Safety tug attended in order to provide assistance. The vessel was shifted to the Buyukdere anchorage, and an investigation file has been placed by the Harbour Master. The vessel was imposed a fine due to breach of strait safe passage regulation.
Ferry collied with bulk carrier in the Strait of Istanbul
A passenger-car ferry collided with a bulk carrier in Istanbul Strait last evening (Dec. 17) injuring one passenger and risking the lives of hundreds of others. M/F Sultanahmet, a 73-meters long ro-ro passenger vessel which makes local voyages, collided with a 168-meters long, Belize flag bulk carrier, which was on the way from Novorossiysk, Russia to Castellon, Spain. Both ships were slightly damaged after the accident, one passenger injured on the ferry, but many others were put under risk as the accident could be disastrous. SeaNews found out that Belize flag vessel was passin the Strait without using the service of a qualified pilot, despite the strong recommendations by the International Maritime Organization and by the Turkish Government.
