Third mate injured in compressor explosion

Wed Dec 03 09:46:42 CET 2014 Timsen

During its transit through the Strait of Magellan, the Chilean transport ship "Aquiles - AP-41 assisted in the medevac of a Filipino crew member of the "Sunny Royal" at Paso Tortuoso, 180 kilometers southwest of Punta Arenas, on Dec 2, 2014. The man, aged 34,who was the third mate, had suffered injuries and burns on his face and upper extremities in the explosion of an air compressor. The Navy ordered the "Aquiles", which was returning to its home port in Valparaiso after participating in an Antarctic Campaign, to assist the injured because the ship is equipped with a team of medicals and had facilities such as nursing room and rays. Doctors and nurses were embarked to the bulkcarrier and successfully stabilized the patient. At 2.30 a.m. the patient was transferred onto the Navy ship where various medical procedures were carried out. At 10 a.m. the "Aquiles ' docked at the Capitán Guillermos de Asmar wharf to take the injured to the Magallanes Clinic in Punta Arenas.
