Woman from Gelsenkirchen died in collision on Prinses Margrit Canal

A 69-year-old woman from Gelsenkirchen has died in the collision between a pleasure yacht and the 'Spes Vera' on the Princess Margriet Canal in Friesland on Sep 22. The other occupant, a 76-year-old man, was still in the hospital for a check-up. The irst victim was found in the boat at 3:25 p.m., the second victim was found a short time later by the divers of the Fire Brigade. At around 11 p.m., shipping on the Princess Margriet Canal near Warten has been resumed. The traffic had been halted for 8,5 hours for the rescue operation The skipper of the 'Spes Vera' has been arrested by the police as protocol, in order to to take a statement from him. The two occupants of the German motor yacht have been taken to the hospital. No other people were being sought. The boat, which was resting bottom up with the stern showing above the water, was pulled to shore using a crane. The 'Spes Vera' remained stationary near the Fonejacht Bridge in pos. 53° 09' N 005° 56' E as of Sep 24. German yacht sank after collision with Spes Vera

A pleasure yacht from Gelsenkirchen with two people on board was run over by the ' Spes vera' on the afternoon of Sep 22, 2025, on the Prinses Margriet Canal near the Fonejachtbrug Bridge south of Leeuwarden. The inland vessel hit the stern of the motor yacht, after which it capsized and partially sank. The emergency services were called around 2:30 p.m. to the accident site near Warten. At 3:25 p.m. the first victim was found in the boat. A short time later, a second victim was found. They were taken to the hospital by ambulance. The inland vessel was lying perpendicular the waterway after the collision. The cause of the collision was not yet known. A rope was spammed from the barge to the sunken motor yacht. Several emergency services from the region responded to the scene, and a trauma helicopter was dispatched. Fire brigade units, including more divers and firefighting vessels, were also on site to provide assistance. The KNRM and police boats also responded. Fire department units from Grou, Burgum, Oudega, Sneek, Leeuwarden, and Langweer a.o. were participatingin the SAR operation. The situation was scaled down on the late aftrernoon. The 'Spes-Vera' was en route from Groningen to Lelystad. The Princess Margriet Canal was timewise blocked at kilometer 75. The Stûkenwei was closed for traffic too. The barge was moored at the quay at the end of the afternoon and was no longer blocking the waterway. The police launched an investigation.
