Ferry salvaged at Mindelo
UCS Underwater contractors finally raised the "Soby" at Mindelo, São Vicente island after several failed attempts on May 14, 28 days after the start of the salvage operation, led by the Spanish company Underwater Contractor Spain (UCS). The ship could be straightened after removing the cargo several trucks with trailers and containers. Due to very limited resources and lack of crane capacity on the Island, the UCS dive team installed several old fuel tanks 15000l and 25000l found on a local scrap yard. The tanks were installed on the car deck giving 75 tons of buoyancy plus air bags, giving enough force to turn the vessel upright and dewater the hull until it was floating on even keel again. For dewatering, the pumps of the UCS diving vessel "Neptune", a former patrol boat of the Swedish Coastguard, was used. The boat's hydraulic system was connected to the hydraulic system of the ferry so the dive team was able to close the back door and ramp using the existing hydraulic system. all ventilation intakes were closed as well as a hole of a ½ sqm in the hull. Two ruptures which initially had not been traced and originated from the vessel's position on the bottom had to be welded. Three cranes finally brought the ship back on even keel.
