Decommissioned trawler scuttled
After several years moored at the North Jetty of Mar del Plata, the “Sirius” was scuttled in the Cristo Rey Submarine Park, located about eight kilometers from the Mar del Plata coast, on July 21, following a two-year preparation process to get it ready for the depths, where it is expected to be visited by recreational divers from all over the world. Dismantling, cleaning, decontamination and installation of security bars were carried out on the “Sirius” by several local companies, all under the supervision and control of the Argentine Naval Prefecture. In the coming weeks the same procedure will be carried out with the m/v “Ribazón Dorine”, but there was still no date set for its sinking, since it depended on the sea. conditions. Decommissioned trawler to be scuttled
The 'Sirius' has spent her last days in the North Breakwater in Mar del Plata, and after two years of preparation process for the preparation of the ship, incldung dismantling, cleaning, decontamination work and installation of security bars by several local companies, under the supervision and control of the Argentine Naval Prefecture, the shuo will be towed to the Cristo Rey underwater park, about eight kilometers from the Mar del Plata coast, on July 18, 2024. There, a diver from the Canal y Canal company will open the valves, and the ship will begin to flood. The coordination work carried out by the Thalassa civil association, which was supported by the other local sports diving schools, made this possible. After the studies carried out in the previous sinking of the fishing vessel 'Sinbad', scientists from the National University of Mar del Plata and members of the “BiodA Project” were able to determine that the vessel has been colonized by different pioneer organisms a few weeks after the sinking. And within a year a biological community is formed similar to the one found in the surrounding natural rocky bottoms, dominated by mussels, anemones and hydroids. The boat's numerous microhabitats serve as a refuge for reef fish typical of our coast, such as turks, groupers and chubsters. The 'Sirius' will generating a new point of tourist attraction for the city, enlarging the underwater park and placing it in the second national place with the highest number of shipwrecks, sharing the position with Puerto Madryn.
