Shonan Maru No. 2 in New Zealand's EEZ
On Feb 8, 2014, at 01.36 a.m. NZDT the "Shonan Maru No. 2", serving as a security vessel of the Japanese whaling fleet, entered the New Zealand’s EEZ, tailing the Sea Shepherd conservation ship "Steve Irwin". Radio New Zealand has reported that the vessel entered the country’s 200 nautical mile limit, ignoring a request by the New Zealand government to stay outside.
Shonan Maru No. 2 leaves Southern Ocean - crossing north of 60 degrees
The anti-whaling group Sea Shepherd says the Japanese whaling fleet has left the Southern Ocean. Sea Shepherd captain Paul Watson has posted a statement on the , saying the entire Japanese fleet is heading north. He says he is 80 per cent sure the whaling season is over. "The ships crossing north of 60 degrees are the Nisshin Maru, Yushin Maru, Yushin Maru No.2, Shonan Maru No.2, the Steve Irwin and the Bob Barker," Mr Watson wrote. "The entire Japanese whaling fleet is now north of 60 degrees and out of the Southern Ocean whale sanctuary." Mr Watson says his group's four ships are continuing to follow the fleet. "We're still escorting them, they're about two hundred miles (321 kilometres) north of 60 and the Sun Laurel, their tanker, is another two hundred miles north of the Nisshin Maru," he said.
Japan wants action against Sea Shepherd
TOKYO has demanded action by the federal government against Sea Shepherd conservationists in response to a complaint over the incursion of a Japanese whalers' ship into Australian waters. The security ship Shonan Maru No. 2 spent at least 16 hours inside the Australian exclusive economic zone around sub-Antarctic Macquarie Island, according to the group, whose boat Bob Barker was being tailed by the ship. Shonan Maru No. 2 stopped short of entering the 12 nautical mile territorial limit around Macquarie on Friday and the Bob Barker was able to shake off the pursuit, the Sea Shepherd skipper Peter Hammarstedt said.
