Yacht gutted by fire off Terneuzen
The KNRM-boats from Breskens and Hansweert were alerted on Apr 20, 2018, at 10.28 a.m. after the "Persistent“ had caught fire in the South-Everingen fairway on the Wester Scheldt. Both boats speeded towards Terneuzen, Rijkswaterstaat deployed the patrol boats "RWS 78“ and "Multraship Rescue 2“. Upon their arrival the yacht was grounded and well alight close to the ZE-4 buoy between Terneuzen and Ellewoutsdijk on a sandy shallow. The crew of two had saved themselves in a safe distance. Two rescuers of the "Zeemanshoop“ were dropped off on the shallow to recover them. They were taken aboard the "RWS 78“. The lifeboat "Jan van Engelenburg“ returned to Hansweert and took on board a team of the MIRG (Maritime Incident Response Group) of the fire brigade. Rijkswaterstaat coordinated thee response. The "Persistent“ was gutted by hte fire. The salvors of Multraship from Terneuzen refloated the wreck and towed it through the Gent-Terneuzen-Canal to the Aricom-Yard, where it was lifted out of the water for investigations.
