Pirate attack repelled

Thu Feb 23 22:30:36 CET 2012 Timsen

On Feb 22, 2012, at 11.22 a.m. the "North Sea" was attacked by a pirate skiff with small arms. A private security team repelled the attack. The German supplier "Berlin" immediately launched two "Sea King" helicopters of the Marine Air Squad 5 in Kiel. The helicopter crews discovered the skiff with eight persons aboard a little later which was trying to flee. As the pirates did not want to stop, one helicopter fired warning shots with a heavy machine guns and the pirates stopped. Short time later the "Berlin" sent a speed boat with a boarding team from the naval protection forces from Eckernförde. They arrested the eight men and secured evidence. At the same time three other boats were sighted in the vicinity and then approached by the two Sea King helicopters. It identified all three as fishermen. The "Berlin" took the eight suspected pirates and their boat on board to investigate. Two of the Somalis were injured and were supplied on board where they will remain until furhter notice.
