Tug lost steering ability

Thu Sep 08 11:34:14 CEST 2011 Timsen

The "Sam M. Fleming" sent out an emergency call in the night of Sep 8, 2011, on the Monongahela River in Braddock and the captain reported losing the ability to steer. The tug was pushing nine jumbo barges filled with coal and had left the Braddock Locks and Dam about 6:50 p.m. After having lost steering, the vessel still had power and the captain also had control over the ship, but put out a call to other vessels. Two came to assist, as did the river rescue from McKeesport and Braddock.
