SAR boat deployed to distressed yacht

Thu Aug 10 11:00:09 CEST 2023 Timsen

On Aug 6, 2023, the "Salvamar Illes Pitiüses" was mobilized from Porto Colom after the Slovakian flagged, 15-m-sailing yacht 'Splendid' had got in trouble in front of the Cala Millor beach in Mallorca after having suffered an engine failure. The couple on board issued an emergency call at around 7:30 p.m., and the 'SalvamarIlles Pitiüses' attended. Two lifeguards boarded the 'Splendid', but the ship had already drifted aground and was full of water. Normal anchoring was no longer possible. The couple was able to secure a few valuables and were then taken to the beach unharmed. Salvage work commenced on Aug 8. A towing service tried to get the partially submerged ship buoyant again with inflatable floats. It was then to be brought into deeper waters so as not to scrape the seabed. The floats were inflated on Aug 9. However, attempts to tow the boat failed.
