Medevac off Castlebay

Thu Mar 27 21:36:10 CET 2014 Timsen

The Isle of Barra RNLI Lifeboat was launched on Mar 26, 2014, having been alerted by Stornoway Coastguard to attend an injured fisherman from the "Roselend". The crewman had sustained an injury to his hand, thought to be broken fingers. The lifeboat launched at 10.06 p.m. with a crew of six while the fishing vessel was heading for Castlebay on Barra. The Barra Lifeboat met the commercial fishing vessel in sheltered waters and the injured fisherman was transferred to the Barra Lifeboat. The injured fisherman was transferred back to the lifeboat station where he was met by an awaiting ambulance.

French trawler’s operations hampered by Greenpeace activists

Thu Nov 17 17:18:42 CET 2011 arnekiel

A group of Greenpeace activists hampered the French trawler Roselend’s deep-sea fishing operations in the northeast Atlantic to denounce this fishing method, which destroys bottom habitats and capture overfished species stocks. Protesters aboard the vessel Arctic Sunrise joined a life raft with a rope to the cables pulling the trawling net of the vessel so as to stop the fishing operation. The action is part of the NGO campaign launched last October in the northeast Atlantic to demand an end to overfishing and a change in fisheries management through the proper reform of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP), reported Greenpeace. According to the environment organization, the deep-sea trawling fishing has been practised from 400 to over 1,500 metres in depth. http://www.fis.com/fis/worldnews/worldnews.asp?monthyear=&day=17&id=47717&l=e&special=&ndb=1%20target=
