Bridge pier hit by barge

Thu Mar 15 22:27:51 CET 2012 Timsen

The U.S. Route 51 Ohio River Bridge at Cairo was closed to vehicular traffic for a short period of time in on Mar 14, 2012, after it was struck by a 12-barge tow of the "Robert T". The tug was pushing 12 empty flat-deck barges down-bound when the tow struck the up stream side of the main span pier on the Kentucky side of the river at 11.20 p.m. A Kentucky Transportation Cabinet bridge inspector was been dispatched to run a safety inspection on the bridge. The bridge was reopened about 2 a.m. on Feb 15 after the emengency inspection was being completed. The Wickliffe-Cairo Bridge carries US Route 51, US Route 60, and US Route 62 traffic across the Ohio River at US Route 51 Kentucky mile point 7.372.
