Barge grounded on the Waal near Tiel

The 'River Drone 2', en route from IJmuiden to Antwerp, ran aground on a sandbank in pos. 51° 53' N 005° 28' E on the Waal near Tiel on Sep 23, 2025. at the estuary with the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal. The barge was preventing other vessels from passing, so it was closed to shipping. Attempts to free the vessel with several ships, including the 'La Quatra' (MMSI: 244140807), which interrupted its voyage from IJmuiden to Rotterdam for several hours, have so far been unsuccessful. Due to the stuck barge, the locks of the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal were also inaccessible. Due to darkness, the attempts to free the ship were aboarted until the morning of Sep 24. The waterway remained closed until then. On Sep 24, the 'Leendert Sr.' (MMSI: 244660235) went alongside to lighter the cargo onto the 'River Drone 3' (IMO: 9973561). The patrol boat 'RWS 72' was securing the grounding site. The ship was then successfully refloated and left Tiel the same day en route to thew Ghent Coal, where it arrived on the foremdiiday of Sep 25.
