Chance of survival for 54 missing migrants decreasing

Tue Oct 01 10:19:10 CEST 2024 Timsen

The search for the 54 missing people, who went missing after their boat capsized on Sep 28, 2024, seven kilometers off the coast of El Hierro, was continued for the third consecutive day on Sep 30 by sea, land and air on Sep 30, while 112 sub-Saharan Africans, among them three minors, arrived in El Hierro. A third cayuco was intercepted off the Canary Islands with 70 migrants on board on Sep 28. The possibility of finding any more survivors was idecreasing rapidly. While the 'Rio Tajo', 'Guardamar Caliope', a semi-rigid boat from the GEAS underwater group and another from the Red Cross, as well as two helicopters, a Cuco from the armed institute and another from the GES of the regional government, continued the rescue work, in addition, two drones from the Civil Guard were added in an area closer to the coast and were to be joined by two more from the regional GES. There were resources deployed ashore to detect if remains of the shipwreck and bodies appear in the coastal area. The great water depthwhere the shipwreck occurred, dropping to 1000 meters, can prevent, due to pressure, the bodies from emerging to the surface, to which are added the underwater currents that make it difficult to locate more bodies.

Migrants returned to Senegal

Fri Sep 01 11:26:31 CEST 2023 Timsen

168 migrants returned to Senegal on Aug 30 after spending almost a week in limbo on the 'Rio Tajo'. They were expected to arrive in Dakar by sea in the evening. Since Aug 24, the migrants had been stuck aboard a Civil Guard vessel near the northwest African nation of Mauritania after authorities there refused to let them disembark. The crew on the 'Rio Tajo' at multiple points fired gunshots into the air to quell riot attempts. On Aug 29, the Spanish Commission for Refugees (CEAR) asked Spanish authorities not to bring the migrants back to Senegal, since the current political and social situation in Senegal was very delicate and could put these people at risk.
