Supplier shut down rig fire
The "Randi Katherine" on Nov 16, 2012, responded to a platform fire aboard the "West Delta 32-A" in the Gulf of Mexico off Louisiana. The ship was about 17 miles away when the platform exploded. It took a little more than an hour to get to the oil and natural gas platform owned by Black Elk Energy of Houston which was still burning when they got there. Because the "Randi Katherine" had a large water cannon, its crew moved in and put the fire out within one hour. The Coast Guard inspected it to make sure the fire was out. The platform was down for repairs at that time. Divers hired by the owner of the oil platform in the Gulf of Mexico recovered a body in the waters near the site on Nov 16 evening which was thought to be one of the two workers which had been missing after the explosion. The body was found close to the leg of the platform, near where the explosion occurred, in about 30 feet of water. The missing men were employees of oilfield contractor Grand Isle Shipyard. The Coast Guard turned over the remains to local authorities. The divers continued to search for the second missing worker. The news came shortly after the Coast Guard suspended a 32-hour-long search for the two missing workers that covered 1,400 square miles near the oil platform, located about 20 miles southeast of Grand Isle, La. Four other workers who were severely burned remained at Baton Rouge General Medical Center in the night. Officials at Baton Rouge General Medical Center said that two men remained in critical condition, while two men remained in serious condition. The four, being treated in a burn unit, were also employees of Grand Isle Shipyard and were from the Philippines. The hospital and Grand Isle Shipyard were trying to reach the men's families in the Philippines.
