Ferry sank tourist boat and damaged catamaran
In the port of Split, the 'Petar Hektorović' broke loose during a violent storm on the morning of July 7, 2025, and allided with two nearby vessels. The force of the impact caused one of the vessels, the large tourist excursion vessel 'Krubna Mora', to sink. The incident occurred during a fierce weather event that struck Split and its surroundings around 9 a.m., bringing torrential rain, hail, and powerful winds. The mooring lines of the 'Petar Hektorović' snapped under the pressure of strong winds. The ferry began to drift through the harbour, first striking the catamaran' Krilo' (IMO: 9500493), before slamming into the large tourist boat within minutes. It hit the boat so hard it started sinking immediately. A man had to jump out to escape. Only the superstructure of the boat remained above the water, but despite the severity of the allision, there were no reports of serious injuries. Since the "Kruna mora" was moored alongside the passenger m/v "Voyage" at the time of the accident, the latter also sustained damage to the upper deck area on the starboard side, where the ship's railing was also torn off and the glass in the ship's saloon was broken. The owner of the "Kruna mora" was ordered by LK Split to prepare for the removal of the ship, and for this purpose he hired a diving team to inspect the underwater damage on the vessel. The Voluntary Fire Department DVD Kašetela was deployed, and since there was diesel fuel remaining in the ship's tanks, a triple barrier of absorbent dams was installed. The captain and crew of the 'Petar Hektorović' dropped both anchors to stabilize the ship and prevent further damage within the port. Emergency services were deployed to the scene. The full extent of damage to the 'Krilo' and 'Petar Hektorović, 'which was dented and breached at the starboard side stern and suffered abrasions at starboard side, has yet to be determined. An investigation has been launched into the incident, and the ferry was banned from sailing. In the North Port of Split, the bulk carrier "Aye Evolution" broke off its berth at berth number 5. The ship was safely returned to the berth, with the assistance of a tug.
