Barge damaged by fire

Fri Aug 25 13:12:00 CEST 2017 Timsen

The "Peludos", 1270 ts (EU-No.: 05306490), caught fire in the port of Ginsheim-Gustavsburg in the night of Aug 17, 2017, at 9.30 p.m. The engine room and the cabin area were ablaze. Fire boats from Wiesbaden and Gernsheim and the fire brigade Ginsheim-Gustavsburg attended. The ship had berthed some hours earlier in order to take on board a cargo of petrol coke on Aug 18, bound to Rotterdam. Smoke was billowing from all openings in the aft. It turned out that a hydraulic fuel pipe had ruptured and oil was set alight. Short after the arrival of the fire fighters the fire was brouhgt under control by flooding the engine room with foam. Fire fighters with respirators penetrated the engine room. Intense heat created problems for them, so the hull of the vessel was cooled from outside. About 130 fire fighters were on scene timewise. The fire rescue Nauheim took water samples to detect possible environmental threats. The water used for fire fighting was contained before it could get into the Rhine. After five hours the fire brigades could be stood down with a guard remaining on site. Two crew members of the barge and one fire fighter had to be medically treated, one of them was taken to hospital. The ship was detained by the police. It had suffered severe damage.
