OOCL announces that the shipbuilder of 8,888 TEU vessel, OOCL Beijing, has won the “Shanghai Municipality’s First Class Award for Science and Technology Advancement”, World Maritime News reports. OOCL Beijing was built by Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group) Co., Ltd. (Hudong-Zhonghua) of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) and she is, by far, the largest container vessel designed and constructed using advanced and innovative technologies solely developed in China. OOCL christened its newest ship the OOCL Beijing in ceremonies Thursday at Hungdong -Zhonghua Shipbuilding in Shanghai. The OOCL Beijing is the first in a new series of eight container ships with capacities of 8,888 20-foot-equivalent units apiece, ordered from Hungdong -Zhonghua. It will be deployed on the intra-Asia MAX service with a 42-day round-trip port rotation of Shanghai, Ningbo, Hong Kong, Shekou, Singapore, Jebel Ali, Damman, Bandar Abbas, Port Kelang, Singapore, Hong Kong and back to Shanghai.
